ROMULUS, Mich. - A 22-year-old woman is criminally charged after authorities said she assaulted flight attendants and a passenger during a United Airlines flight Thursday from New York to Chicago, forcing the airplane to divert and land at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

A federal criminal complaint accuses Breanna Farquharson of "frantically" demanding to deplane about 30 minutes into the flight. When a flight attendant told her she could not deplane, Farquharson ran to the back of the airplane where she approached another flight attendant...

Passenger’s disturbance diverts flight to Detroit Metro

Mark Hicks, The Detroit News 1:42 a.m. EST January 8, 2016

Detroit Metro Airport police arrested a female passenger Thursday after she caused a disturbance on board, forcing her flight to be diverted to Michigan.

“Shuttle America flight 3461, operating as United Express from New York’s LaGuardia Airport to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, diverted to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Thursday night due to a disruptive passenger,” a representative wrote in an email to The Detroit News...

Did extreme fear overcome this person? Panic attack maybe? Have always suspected this is the case at times, if alcohol is not involved. Jmo.

Just looked up PB - non-insane automatism? Have a feeling that was 'invented' for celebrities and others with money. Pathetic - imo PB was responsible for his actions unlike RA and this gal.

Farquharson is charged with assaulting a flight crew member or flight attendant of the aircraft. She was taken to federal court on Friday before being transported to a nearby hospital. It's not clear when she could be arraigned.

Wow. She came completely unhinged.

Weird how they cuffed her and carried her off the plane though.

I think the passengers tied her up. According to the second article in the first post she was tied with an apron, a tie and a belt.

Well, you left your olive loaf sandwich, parachute pants and dog eared copy of "The Celestine Prophecy" in my ligustrum hedge. I will keep them for you. Maybe not the sandwich.

Seems airlines should stock flights w flex-cuffs* like LEOs carry in riots, or even metal handcuffs, to restrain the unruly. Not like it's a new or uncommon phenomenon. Should paying passengers have to scramble for belts, neck ties, etc. to protect themselves against in flight violence?

Since I first flew yrs ago, passenger decorum has gone so far

Glad I do not have to anymore. Maybe being on a flight and getting clobbered by a drunk/drugged/just a jerk/who-ev is better than the 1960s, when a hijacker w gun would force pilot to divert to Cuba. IDK. End rant.

I feel like some of the downhill behavior of passengers has a lot (not all of course) to do with the degradation of respect by airlines and security. We're treated like cattle, or cargo, with airlines cramming more of us in smaller spaces and charging out the wazoo for every little thing.

It's obviously not the SOLE reason, but I think it's a big part of it. We're SO stressed out from cost and disrespect by the time we sit in our seats, it's no wonder some people snap. Ugh.

It was surprisingly tasty given it lay in my shrubs for a day and a half.

Warning-I am about to become my mother......

"Well , in my day, people dressed nicely to travel. You didn't see any of these cut-offs and flip-flops like people nowadays! You were in public and dressed respectably. Always gloves and hats, my goodness! And you comport yourself accordingly, because air travel a luxury."

My mom would totally plotz if she flew on an airline today. It's worse than the subway. Plus, no cocktails in real glass and no smoking! Egads!!!!

OMGosh. This sounds like my grandmother. She was a firm believer that travel (air, train, boat) was a luxury and you should be dressed accordingly. She was always dressed nice. Never a hair out of place. No matter where she went. But when she traveled? You'd think she was going to some high end luncheon with Jackie Kennedy.

Don't get me wrong, I love my grandmother (R.I.P.), but she could be quite snobbish too.

ETA: I am so happy nothing like this has happened when I fly. I've seen a video of another woman freaking out on a plane. She was screaming that the flight was going to crash. If I would have been on that flight, I would have asked to be put on a later flight... just in case she knew something I didn't know. :hills:

I still dress nicely for flying and judge the schlubs.
