SD - Dick Mashek, 49, shot to death by ex-GF, Box Elder, 9 Sept 2014
Kelly Croyle, 23, is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of Dick Mashek, 49. Croyle made her initial court appearance Thursday. She is being held on a $500,000 cash surety bond...
Mashek's sister said Wednesday that her brother and Croyle had been involved off and on in recent years, but not at the time of his death. Terri Mashek said she did not know what happened between them that could have led to her brother's death...
At the time of her arrest, Croyle was carrying the handgun police believe was used in the murder and $18,000 in cash in a duffel bag...
Magistrate Judge Scott Bogue said there are allegations that Croyle fired additional shots to try to take out security cameras in the residence.
The state says Croyle was on probation for possession of a controlled substance at the time of the shooting...
She faces a mandatory life prison term if she's convicted of the murder charge.

A prosecutor said that the victim in a September homicide provided the state with a "gift" that could help bring his killer to justice: He recorded his own killing on video.
Prosecutors say they have videotape that show not only the four hours before Dick Mashek, 49, was shot and killed at point-blank range in his Box Elder home, but also the exact moment the homicide occurred.
A trial date is set for Kelly Croyle, a 23-year-old Box Elder woman charged with killing her boyfriend. Seventh Circuit Judge Robery Gusinsky set the trial start date for August 19.

A Box Elder woman who faced a murder charge in the September shooting death of her boyfriend was cleared of all charges Tuesday after a video of the incident was reviewed by a national expert who concluded she acted in self defense...
The decision by Vargo came after one of the nation's top forensic experts, Dr. Park Dietz of California, reviewed the killing that was caught on a lengthy video. In a 17-page report, Dietz determined that though Croyle was not being physically attacked at the time of the single fatal shot, she had been beaten, terrorized and threatened for about three hours by the victim prior to the killing...
He concluded that it was a self-defense killing due to the frequent assaults on Croyle by Mashek; his numerous statements over three hours that she would not leave the home alive; the fact he had threatened her verbally 40 times; that he had menaced her six times with both an ax and a gun; and that he held the gun to her head four times, once for 39 seconds straight.
