A MAN will appear in court today charged with the rape and murder of a schoolgirl almost 34 years ago.
Yiannoulla Yianni, 17, was found by her parents at their home in Hampstead, north London, after she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

James Warnock, now 56, was arrested on Tuesday and was charged with the 1982 crimes last night.
He will appear before JPs in Hendon today.

Detective Inspector Julie Willats of the Metropolitan Police's homicide and major crime command, said: "The Met never closes unsolved murders.

"Regardless of the passage of time, cases can and will be reviewed for any new opportunities to develop previously unknown lines of inquiry and to follow-up any fresh information which has become known to us."

During a warm August afternoon she left her Cypriot parents at their shoe shop in Hampstead and walked the short distance home alone to begin preparing the family's evening meal.

She arrived at the family's house at 1.30pm and began setting the table for the meal.

An hour-and-a-half later her parents George and Billi returned home and found their daughter’s lifeless body on a bed.

There had been no signs that the home had been broken into and detectives believed she knew her attacker.

At the time detectives said their prime suspect man in his 20s with black, neatly combed hair, who wore a blue jacket and was 5ft 6in.

DNA linked to the rape and murder of a teenage girl in August 1982 was matched by police almost 34 years later, the Old Bailey has heard...

Opening the trial, prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC told jurors that Yiannoulla had been with her parents Elli and George Yianni at their shoe repair shop on the day of the attack, but went home early to prepare supper.

At around 2pm, a "Mediterranean looking" man in his early 20s was spotted chatting with Yiannoulla on her doorstep. Twenty minutes later a neighbour heard a scream, jurors were told.

A middle-aged handyman has been jailed for life for the rape and murder of Yiannoulla Yianni more than 34 years ago.

A jury at the Old Bailey, who sat through four weeks of harrowing and at times graphic evidence, took just two hours to find James Warnock, 56, guilty on both counts...

He was finally arrested after being caught sharing videos and images of child abuse as part of an online anti-paedophile sting. Routine DNA samples were taken, which were found to match semen left at the scene of Yiannoulla’s death...

Handing Warnock a 25-year minimum sentence on Monday, Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC said he posed “a grave risk to young women” and “will most likely die in prison”.
