Above is more accurate headline than the one used in stltoday.com (St Louis Post Dispatch) headline:
"Robbery suspect fatally shot by officer at St. Louis fast food restaurant"
Blah, blah, blah; yadda, yadda, yadda for three paragraphs after we've read headline & are into fourth paragraph before seeing the most relevant info:
"The gunman raised his handgun toward the sergeant..." bbm
Until then, just a "robbery suspect."
Nothing about "handgun."
Nothing about raising "handgun toward sergeant."

Hmmm, reporting bias? editing bias? Or ?

"There were multiple witnesses inside the restaurant, [SLPD Lt Col.] O’Toole said. There is also video footage from the restaurant."

"Dawn Jones, of the group Faith for Justice, said she was inside the church when someone announced a police shooting had just happened.
“It’s sad,” she said at the church following the shooting. “We’re getting people to take a stand for justice and then this happens. It’s a devastating reminder of why we need to come together.” bbm

I'll give Dawn the benefit of the doubt & azz-ume she was unaware of specifics of events re shooting. If we don't azz-ume that, then we'd have to think Dawn ---
(1) wants people to take a "stand for justice" by protesting an LEO's use of lethal force against someone pointing a gun at him/her; and
(2) believes ppl should "come together" in support of someone pointing a gun at LEO?"

Or is there another way to interpret her statement? ^JM2cts, may be all wrong. Thx in adv.

It could be taken to mean "This is why law enforcement and we as a community need to come together, work together, be cohesive and cooperative."

Or maybe she meant "This is why we as a black community need to come together to police ourselves to ensure our people don't commit robbery and raise weapons against LE."

But you'd have to ask her what she meant. If we as a society don't want to appear to be racist, we can't automatically read the worst from people's statements, IMHO.

Thanks for responding to question in my post about other ways to interp her stmt.

My post shows, imo, I did not "automatically read the worst" from her stmt. To the contrary.
I googled "Dawn Jones Faith for Justice St Louis" and got nothing relevant in early results, but others could put together better searches. Thx agn.

Glad you brought to my attn so we can watch for her future comments.
 
Robbery suspect killed at KFC by police has extensive criminal record

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that West became a registered sex offender in 1980 for assaulting a teenaged boy. He also served time for robbing seven restaurants in October of 1986. FOX 2 is also told West was recently dealing with financial issues.

Fast-food robber killed by St. Louis police had history of holdups in mid 80s

ST. LOUIS • The man police shot and killed Sunday during an armed robbery at a fast-food restaurant had a history of such robberies as well as sodomy, according to court records.

West is listed on Missouri’s sex offender registry for a July 1980 robbery in which he sodomized a boy, 16. West was 18 at the time.

Court records and Post-Dispatch news stories from 1987 show that West was sentenced to 60 years in prison for a string of fast-food restaurant robberies in St. Louis. He used a cap pistol to rob seven restaurants over a 10-day stretch in October 1986.

His mother, Ruth West, said she had viewed his body Monday and confirmed that she was told he had been shot by police.

She said her son was living with her since his release from prison in January 2014. She said he wasn’t married and had an adult son. She said her son was on parole and was supposed to be working. He had been depressed lately because the jobs paid so poorly, she said.

Ruth West said her son had to be tested for drugs with his parole officer, and at least one urine test showed that he been taking drugs, she said. She wasn’t sure what kind of drugs. She said he was sent to a rehab facility for a few months and also to jail for violating his parole.

Clearly, parole was a very bad decision for this violent criminal, IMO. Served 27 years of a 60 year sentence, and within a mere 12 months, he returned to the same behavior from 27 years ago. So much for "prison rehabilitation." Should never have been paroled, IMO.

Even in his 50s, a biological time in life when testosterone drops, and previously violent men become less violent, this guy reverted to previous violent criminal patterns pretty fast.
 
If our justice system was not so eager to give criminals early releases on many sentences, this guy would still be in jail.

One cannot sit in jail for 27 years, get out with no training, no job experience, a record, and expect to make decent hourly pay. What benefit does the parole board consider they are giving a criminal like this with early release?

He was sentenced to 60 years for a reason!
