Max Matthews, 37, was arrested Saturday, April 16 in Edmonton – he’s charged with one count of first-degree murder, and one count of offering an indignity to human remains...

Three other people were charged with first degree murder: Matthew Thiemer, 31, Melvin Pennell, 39, and Christopher Chung, 39. Pennell and Chung were also charged with offering an indignity to human remains.

Melvin Casper Pennell, 39, pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in relation to the slaying of Junior Morris Laidley.

Christopher Chung, Matthew Thiemer, Max Matthews and Pennell were all originally charged with first-degree murder. Chung, Matthews and Pennell were also each charged with offering an indignity to a body. In the time between his arrest and his guilty plea, Pennell’s murder charge was downgraded to manslaughter and on Friday, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of accessory after the fact.

Court heard that a joint submission on sentencing is expected, but that hearing likely won’t happen until 2018. Pennell will remain in custody during that time.

The court cases for the three other suspects are still ongoing.
