Shelby man missing since Saturday

Shelby, North Carolina -
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's help in finding a Shelby man who has been missing since Saturday.

Sandy Canipe, 48, of 112 Dyer Dr., Shelby, was last seen walking to his residence around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to reports from the sheriff’s office.

Canipe is 5-foot-9-inches and has short brown hair and green eyes. Due to conflicting statements, law enforcement is unsure of what Canipe was last wearing. Canipe is known to walk everywhere he went, according to Mark Greg of the sheriff’s office.

“We are unsure where he is. He was last seen on foot, but we don’t know if he was picked up by someone or not,” Greg said."

The search for Canipe, which lasted about a week, was called off on Jan. 21. The case remains open, however, and the sheriff's office is asking for the public's help.

Volunteers searched a 7-mile radius around Canipe’s home, where he lived alone, for the past six days. The more than 50 volunteers, police K-9’s and drones found no trace of Canipe in the area.

Two years and no word from missing man
Sandy Canipe, 48, of Dyer Drive, Shelby, went missing Jan. 16, 2016. Since then, law enforcement agencies have conducted various searches but have come up empty.

Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman considers this still an active and ongoing case, but so far investigators have come up with very little in the disappearance.

Since Sandy Canipe disappeared, law enforcement agencies have conducted multiple searches around his home but have come up empty.

For many on those search teams, this missing person case is very different since it affects the family of one of their own.

“Any missing persons case we always take seriously. But this case in particular hits close to home because it is an employee,” said Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman.

Sandy Canipe was last seen walking to his house around 5:30 p.m. the night he disappeared.

During the original search, the Sheriff’s Office, Cleveland County Emergency Management and multiple other law enforcement agencies spent a week searching the area near his home.

Eleven months later, the search was widened, and law enforcement from all over the county came to help.

The terrain covered consisted of developed and rural areas alike. Many of the searchers donned bruises, and others had blood dripping down their hands and arms from wounds they sustained while in the woods.

There is a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the man’s whereabouts.

Article from 2016. RSBM. I'm interested in his cell phone pings!
New clues could lead to man missing 11 months
Deputies and Shelby police officers renewed the search after they were finally able to put together and analyze a map of all the locator pings from Canipe's cell phone.
Robert Canipe, Sandy's father, hopes this latest evidence will lead to his son.
Cleveland County Sheriff's Captain Joel Shores said this case is just as heart-wrenching for them because Sandy Canipe's son is a deputy.

"It's really tough on us all to look at a fellow worker and say, 'we don't have anything,'" Capt. Shores said.

A $10,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to Canipe's location
