    FL - Miami Gardens PD officer ambushed, shot, 22 Jan 2016

    Chief Antonio Brooklen of Miami Gardens Police identified the victim as Officer David Starling, a veteran of the Miami Gardens Police Department. Starling was completing an accident report just before 8:30 a.m. at Northwest 183rd Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue when police say a gunman made eye contact with Starling, backed up and opened fire.

    As the suspect approached Northwest 20th Avenue, Brooklen says the suspect leaned out of his car and began shooting at officers who were chasing him. The suspect shot again at officers as he approached Northwest 27th Avenue

    Police have identified the gunman as 24-year old David Andres Mejia. Miami Gardens Police said the shooting appears to be an individual act and there is no indication of terrorism.

    David Mejia accepts plea deal after shooting Miami Gardens police officer

    As part of the plea deal, David Mejia will serve four years in prison followed by 10 years of probation. He must also undergo a mental health evaluation.


    Mentally ill gunman who ambushed cop gets four years in prison

    Starling and the Miami Gardens police department approved the plea deal.

    Miami-Dade prosecutor Justin Funck said the state weighed the defendant’s mental health issues, as well as the possibility of the insanity defense. “Those matters weighed heavily in determining a sentence,” Funck said.
