Canada - Leanne Freeman, 23, found murdered, Toronto, Ont, 29 Nov 2011

Not sure if this is related but I instantly thought of Kera when I heard about this poor woman:

A 23-year-old Winnipeg woman who moved to Toronto a few months ago was found shot to death on an isolated street near the city’s waterfront early Tuesday.
Her name is Leanne Freeman and she is young and from the West. SHe came to Toronto to start a new life. I don't know anything else i.e. if she was an escort, etc. She was shot. I can't remember if the cause of death was released in Kera's case.

TO LE told Global News LF was a transient. They hope there might be some video surveillance to help them with their investigation.

Court documents obtained by GN revealed she had been charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking in June of this year in Winnipeg.

In August LE put out a warrant for her arrest after she failed to appear on those charges.

She died of a gun shot to the head

That clip was really good, did I hear correctly that LF was living/working in the Church, Alexander area? That is in the heart of the Gay Village.

The police are sounding a warning about a possible sex-trade killer in the Toronto area. The Star is also making the connection between what happened to Kera and Leanne. Leanne is confirmed to have been working the sex trade in Toronto.

Police suspect her killer was a client.

“I cannot say with any certainty whatsoever that Leanne’s employment had anything to do with her murder,” said Det. Sgt. Brian Borg. “I cannot rule it out. It’s too early to say.”

The case is reminiscent of the death of Kera Freeland, whose body was found in a Caledon ditch last March. The 20-year-old Calgary native worked for a Toronto escort agency. The cause of her death has not been released and the Ontario Provincial Police says the case is still unsolved.

Police don’t know how Freeman advertised her services, but believe she had been working as a prostitute in Toronto since the summer.

Police believe Freeman was murdered at the location where she was found.

The 911 call came from a driver who thought Freeman had been struck by a vehicle. Officers from 55 Division and Traffic Services responded along with emergency workers.

When police found her she was still alive. Fully clothed, she was lying in the middle of the road in “obvious medical distress,” Borg said.

Police now say the murder of a Winnipeg woman in the Port Lands area last month was not random.

The police also found what they consider some key evidence in the case.

Last Friday, some clothing and personal items belonging to Leanne Freeman were found in a garbage dumpster on Kingston Road at Sandown near Midland Avenue.

Detective Brian Borg said the location is only a 20-minute drive from the murder scene and he believes the items were dumped right after her death

    Memorial for Leanne Freeman

Port Lands memorial to slain woman has magnetic effect on passersby
Published On Sun Jan 15 2012Email Print Rss Article

The inscription on the memorial at 450 Unwin Ave. for Leanne Freeman reads, “Death steals a heartache no one can heal/ Love leaves a memory no one can steal.”

It is an unlikely place for a memorial, at the side of a nondescript road flanked by factories and empty land. But this is why cars pull over to have a look, runners stop to read the inscription and it is almost impossible to pass by the engraved stone without at least a quick glance.

It was here, last November, a stranger found the body of 23-year-old Leanne Freeman. The Winnipeg native had been shot in the head, her body dumped at 1 a.m. in the middle of a secluded two-way street in the Port Lands area.

Now, a few metres from where she was found, is a large granite stone wedged deep into the ground to carry a permanent memory of a young woman who friends say was full of life, full of energy and loved to be the centre of attention.

“Every time I go there, I see people stopped around it,” said Robin Brideau, who has dedicated much of his time and money into creating the memorial at 450 Unwin Ave. “That’s why I put it up. That’s what I was hoping for,” he said.

Brideau created the memorial because he wanted people to know the woman behind the headlines.
