WI - Austin Ramos, 5, killed in road attack, Beloit, 22 Jan 2016

    Austin R. Ramos Jr.

    Beloit, Wisconsin -
A 5-year-old boy riding in the back seat of his father's car in southern Wisconsin was killed after an SUV pulled up alongside them and someone opened fire, authorities said.

Police were searching Saturday for the person responsible for the attack, which happened Friday night in Beloit, a city 65 miles southwest of Milwaukee along the Illinois border. The boy, who the Rock County medical examiner's office identified Saturday as Austin Ramos Jr., was shot at least once in the abdomen and died at a hospital.

He died from "firearm related trauma" and investigators were conducting additional testing, the medical examiner's office said in its news release.

Interim Police Chief David Zibolski said the sport utility vehicle had been following the father's car. He said he didn't know long the SUV had pursued the car or if the father was the intended target, but added that the father was cooperating with authorities.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Who does this? He was a child, just an innocent child ... how very sad. Please find whoever did this and let there be justice for this little boy.

    Rest in Peace, dear Austin

Wow, really no info other than just he was killed. I wonder if the father was gang-related or if this was road rage.

    How horrible.

Austin was riding in the back seat of his father's car near Shopiere Road and Prairie Avenue when a maroon SUV pulled up alongside them and someone opened fire, authorities said.

He died from "firearm-related trauma," and investigators are conducting additional testing, the medical examiner's office said in a news release.

Interim police Chief David Zibolski said the sport utility vehicle had been following the father's car. He didn't know how long the SUV had pursued the car or whether the father was the intended target, but the father is cooperating with authorities. Police are reviewing surveillance video recorded near the shooting scene.

Zibolski said investigators hadn't determined how many shots were fired. The father was not hit.

Austin's mother, Jasmin Martinez, is an assistant manager at the Great Clips hair salon in Machesney Park. Her co-workers established a GFM page to help the family, and by Saturday night they had collected more than $12,000.

Patty Walker, a bus driver with the School District of Beloit Turner, took Austin to an afternoon special-needs program at Powers Elementary School in Beloit the past two years. He was known as "Junior," Walker said.

"He liked to smile and make people laugh," an emotional Walker said. "He was just a very good boy. I (have) special-needs (students) on my bus and they can be hard to handle. He took everything in stride."

Austin was a fan of the Chicago Bears; Walker prefers the Packers. She said he would tease her with "Bears rule, Packers drool."

Grandmother of 5 Year-Old Boy Shot and Killed in Beloit Speaks Out
    [...]
"This was a five year old baby he's innocent.. I mean he was sitting in the back seat playing his gameboy, riding with his daddy. Somebody's gotta know something. I hope," Said Alicia Martinez, Grandmother of Ramos.

Police say a car was following behind junior and his dad on Shopiere Road, just West of Prairie Avenue, when another vehicle pulled up along side them and started shooting.

Investigators say the pre-schooler was shot in the stomach and later died at the hospital.

"You know it's not acceptable to the Beloit Police Department or the community that this type of violence occurs. Certainly no one expects to have their five year old taken from them in this fashion," Said Beloit Interim Police Chief, David Zibolski.

Martinez can't figure out what the motive could be for what she says is a senseless crime.

"I would say it was a random act because I don't know who would want to hurt either one of them. My son has spent his life making sure he's a wonderful Father," Said Alicia Martinez, Grandmother of Ramos.

    She called junior her sunshine.

Police say they are also not sure how many shots were fired but the boy's father was not hit. They have no suspects or even a description of the suspects and do not know how many people were in the SUV. The vehicle is described as a late 1990s or early 2000s maroon-coloured SUV. Police are now going through surveillance video from the area in an attempt to get a better description.

    From August:

Four shooting suspects’ trials still not set

    http://www.beloitdailynews.com/news/...1760b4718.html

It could be 2017 before any trials will be held regarding the fatal shooting of 5-year-old Austin Ramos Jr.

Eric Salazar-Mota, 21, of Beloit, came into a Rock County courtroom smiling during a court appearance Friday. During the hearing his defense attorney Eduardo Borda said he had an extensive amount of discovery evidence to comb through and he would need 60 days before the next status hearing.

The vast amount of evidence is due, in part, to extensive and exhaustive investigation by the Beloit Police Department which Braunschweig said was very good. Police had canvassed the neighborhood to interview residents. Braunschweig said it’s difficult to know when any of the cases could go to trial, but it might not be until the new year because of the amount of evidence.

Salazar-Mota is one of the four suspects in an incident which resulted in the fatal shooting of 5-year-old Austin Ramos Jr. He has been charged with party to the crime of first degree intentional homicide along with Sergio R. Ortiz, aka Sergio Ortiz Raygoza, 24, of Fonda, Iowa; Isaac Torres, 24, of Beloit, and Hugo Martinez, 18, of Beloit.

Around 100 relatives, friends and supporters gathered Saturday evening to remember Austin “Junior” Ramos, nearly a year after the beloved five-year-old was shot and killed in Beloit.

Saturday’s ceremony was bookended by a candlelight vigil, with family and friends lighting lanterns and quietly sharing fond memories of Junior. Since his tragic death, the family has raised over $5,000 through a motorcycle ride on his birthday in June and a back-to-school event later in the summer. All proceeds will be given to area schools to start the “Junior Superhero Scholarship” fund in his memory.

Junior’s mother, Jasmine Martinez, said she wanted the community to remember Junior for who he was — happy, fun and full of joy.

“We wanted to honor his name, and for the community to get to know him,” she said.
Four arrests were made following the shooting last year. Sergio Ortiz Raygoza, 23, has a trial date set for Feb. 27; Hugo Martinez, 18, will have a court hearing on March 10; Isaac Torres, 24, will have a court hearing on March 17; and Eric Salazar-Mota, 21, will be in court on March 31.
Family remembers 5-year-old Beloit boy on anniversary of his death

On Jan. 22, 2016, 5-year-old Austin Ramos Jr., was shot and killed near the intersection of Shopiere Road and Prairie Avenue in Beloit. Ramos Jr. was shot while sitting in the backseat of his father's car.

"It's hard to just imagine that a year ago, we lost him," said Alicia Martinez, Ramos Jr.'s grandmother, while holding back tears. "Sometimes you think back to that day, and the hurting, it just never goes away."

Martinez tries to keep her grandson's memory alive, with several posters holding pictures of him along with the toys he used to play with.

"It's been hard, I just try to stay strong," said Martinez.

Trial in murder of 5-year-old postponed; defendant claims alibi

    http://www.gazettextra.com/20170222/...t_claims_alibi

One of the four defendants accused in the murder of a 5-year-old Beloit boy Jan. 22, 2016, says he has an alibi—he was in Iowa.

That's one of the reasons his trial is being delayed until July.

Sergio R. Ortiz, 24, of Fonda, Iowa, is accused of being in a vehicle when shots were fired into another vehicle in Beloit, killing Austin R. Ramos Jr. He faces a charge of party to first-degree intentional homicide.

Ortiz's trial was postponed Wednesday to July 10 because of delays in getting evidence processed by the state Division of Criminal Investigation regarding cellphone locations, the alibi investigation and other commitments by the judge and/or attorneys.

    Shooting Suspect Appears in Court

    http://www.beloitdailynews.com/artic...ICLE/170319968

One of the four suspects allegedly involved in the fatal shooting last year of Austin Ramos, Jr., a Beloit five-year-old, appeared in Rock County Circuit Court Friday morning. A trial could come this summer.

Hugo Martinez, 19, of Beloit is charged with party to the crime of first degree intentional homicide along with Eric Salazar Mota, 22; Isaac Torres, 25; Sergio Ortiz, 24. The four were allegedly driving around Beloit in January of last year looking for rival Latin King gang members to shoot in retaliation to the 2015 shooting death of Jose Ortiz, Sergio Ortiz’ brother, according to Rock County Circuit Court documents.

Ortiz had a trial date set for July, and will be a co-defendant with Eric Salazar Mota. Torres and Martinez will be tried separately, after the pair gave statements allegedly implicating Ortiz during interviews with investigators.

The implicating testimony against Ortiz prompted Martinez’ defense attorney Scott Schroeder to request Martinez be tried after the conclusion of the Ortiz-Mota case. Judge Michael Haakenson granted the request and Martinez will appear in court again at 9 a.m. Aug. 11. Ortiz and Mota’s case will head to trial in early July. Mota will appear in court at 9 a.m. on March 31.

Man accused in Ramos shooting 'remorseful yet eager for truth'

    http://www.beloitdailynews.com/artic...ICLE/170319772

“He was riding around to drink and hang out with his buddies. It was a decision to be a young impetuous kid. Someone else’s hot-headed decision turned a day of hangout into a tragedy,” Hart said.

Assistant State Public Defender Hart shared a little about the 25-year-old following his court appearance Friday. Judge Michael Haakenson set Torres’ next status conference for 9 a.m. May 12.
Hart said evidence points to only one shooter and is in line with testimony Torres gave in his preliminary hearing.

Hart has represented Torres before for minor crimes. He said Torres is a young man who thought he was going out drinking and smoking with his buddies that night.

“At the spur of the moment, someone else did the shooting,” Hart said.

Although the law on the street is to keep one’s mouth shut, Hart said Torres has always been truthful. He noted there were two confidential informants who were not charged. If Torres stepped forward sooner, he may not have been charged either.

Torres would have spoken out earlier but he missed a court date, had a warrant out for his arrest and was afraid.

With a trial likely this summer, Hart said Torres looks forward to the opportunity to maintain his innocence. Hart said Torres is extremely remorseful.
