IL - James Anderson, 33, fatally shot by Chicago police, Sept 2015

The shooting occurred in September. I checked but didn't find an earlier thread.

Lawsuit alleges Chicago cop shot unarmed, mentally disturbed man

According to the suit, Pamela Anderson called police to her home in the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue because her son had stopped taking his medication for a "mild mental illness" and she wanted them to escort him to a hospital, as police had done in the past. She explained that her son was unarmed and not violent, and when officers arrived she was waiting on the porch to let them know he was in his first-floor bedroom listening to music, the suit alleges.

Still, the lawsuit alleges, one officer drew his gun, walked to the bedroom and knocked on the door twice. The officer then positioned himself in a shooting position against the rear door of the kitchen, according to the suit.

When Anderson emerged from his bedroom, he was "suddenly and without warning" shot seven times in front of his mother, the suit says
Chicago sued over fatal police shooting

The family of a man with a mental illness fatally shot last year by Chicago police has sued the city over his death.

The mother of James Anderson, 33, who lived in the 900 block of North Central Park, filed her lawsuit against the city and unnamed police officers late last week. Pamela Anderson said her son was unarmed Sept. 25 and didn’t threaten police when one officer shot him seven times. CPD officials said at the time the man threatened officers with a “knife or sharp object.”

    From September:

Man Fatally Shot By CPD Officer In Humboldt Park

A 33-year-old man was shot and killed by a Chicago Police officer Friday night in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side, and his mother disputes the police department’s account of the fatal incident.

About 8:55 p.m., officers responding to a domestic disturbance in the 900 block of North Central Park Avenue saw a man holding “what appeared to be a knife or a sharp object,” according to a statement from Chicago Police.

The officers ordered the man to drop it, but he didn’t listen and “approached the officers in a threatening manner,” police said. The officers used a Taser but it had no effect on the man, police said.

Officers used the stun gun again but he charged with the weapon once more and an officer shot him, police said.
Mother Disputes Police Account After Mentally Challenged Son Fatally Shot By Officer

“My whole kitchen was lit up… from them shooting,” Anderson said. “It was dark, there wasn’t no light on or nothing. I had to run to my room for cover, to keep them from shooting me, to keep them from shooting me, and I begged them while they was shooting to stop, he don’t have nothing.”

Anderson’s family wants to know why the discrepancy in the use of the Taser and did officers on scene know that he was mentally challenged.
    This is too familiar.

    From the first link above:

The account given in the suit differs sharply from statements given by police immediately after the shooting. At the time, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers had responded to a domestic disturbance at the residence. They encountered a group of adults and saw a man in the group holding a "knifelike object" in his hand who refused orders to drop the weapon, he said.

An officer twice tried to use a Taser on the man, but the device's prongs didn't reach him, he said. The officers again ordered the man to drop the object. When he did not, one of the officers shot him at least once , Guglielmi said

Guglielmi said a "box cutter-like" object was found at the scene.

Man killed in police-involved shooting on West Side

When officers arrived, Anderson says she asked officers to take her son to the hospital. Anderson says the officers asked if her son had a gun or knife on him. Anderson said she told officers that her son was not dangerous, but that he did keep a box cutter in his pocket.

Anderson contradicts the police account saying officers did not taser her son before shooting him.

"When he pulled his gun out and cocked it back, I said 'sir, you don't have to pull that gun back, you don't have to cock it back. He's not going to hurt you,'" said Anderson.

It will be interesting to see evidence in this case.

At link, reporter uses "taser" and "stun gun" as interchangeable.
Sorry, no faith in accuracy of other info, if reporter does not know there is a diff.

Is it made clear in any of the other articles? Is there a direct quote from law enforcement that clarifies which was used on Anderson?

    I'll look.
As we have seen in many other cases, inaccurate info can come from LE, from 911 callers, eye witnesses, and others. Not taking anyone's account as gospel.

I wonder what they mean by a "box cutter like object." An X-Acto? Utility knife? Nail file?

The green and blue knives are what I would call utility knives. But I think they would say utility knife or box cutter not box cutter like object.
