A 22-month-old baby boy has died after being critically injured in a shooting on the Eastside, Friday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, a grandmother, mother and the baby boy were parked in front of a house on Spearing Street when an unidentified vehicle came by spraying bullets, leaving the baby critically injured.

JSO Chief of Investigations Tom Hackney said the only person injured in the incident was the toddler, Aiden Michael McClendon.

A 22-month-old boy is dead after being shot multiple times while sitting inside a vehicle on Jacksonville’s Eastside Friday evening, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Aiden Michael McClendon was shot once in the shoulder and multiple times in the abdomen just after 6 p.m. in a drive-by shooting in the 700 block of Spearing Street that left the car he was in and a nearby house sprayed with bullets, Chief Tom Hackney said.

The boy was admitted to a hospital in critical condition after the shooting and later died.

Inside the parked vehicle was the boy, his mother and his grandmother. However, Hackney said it appears the intended target was inside the house.

“The senseless nature of this continues to draw attention,” Hackney said.

The toddler's killing has prompted city and faith leaders to gather Saturday in a joint news conference to address the ongoing violence plaguing Jacksonville. Mayor Lenny Curry and Sheriff Mike Williams will be joined by Bishop John Guns of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and Operation Save our Sons and Wyllie Hodges, the executive director of First Coast Crime Stoppers.

On Friday, the community came together to remember a toddler killed in a drive-by shooting. A memorial was held for 22-month-old Aiden McClendon.

On January 29, Aiden was shot in a drive-by.

It’s a murder that has outraged the community. Aiden was caught in the crossfire of gang violence. An act that breaks the heart of AJ Jordan, Vice President of MADDADS Jacksonville.

“Shooting into a car! They don’t know what they’re shooting at and they killed a 22-month-old baby,” Jordan said.

Police say Aiden wasn’t the target but the shooting itself was gang-related.

Aiden was shot multiple times. He was in a car with his mother and grandmother when the drive-by shooting happened on Jacksonville’s Eastside near the intersection of Spearing and Albert streets.

Charge dropped for man thought to be connected to Aiden murder - August

The State's Attorney Office says a formal charge against D'angelo Wilson, in the case against a 22-month-old's murder, has been dropped.

The Attorney's Office told First Coast News after reviewing the evidence and the law, the State determined Wilson’s actions did not rise to the level of a prosecutorial offense.

D'Angelo Antwain Wilson, 23, was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and accessory after the fact to a capital felony in connection to the toddler's death, but the second charge has since been dropped.

Wilson was sentenced to 144 days in jail for a possession of a firearm by a convicted felon charge.

Evidence reveals new details in toddler's killing - September

The discovery material, which includes several discs with interviews, arrest reports and surveillance video, outlines how the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office pieced together a timeline and gathering evidence needed to make arrests in the Jan. 29 shooting, which killed toddler Aiden McClendon.

Police said Aiden was sitting in a car with his mother and grandmother parked in front of a house on Spearing Street about 6 p.m. when a white car came by and two gunmen inside sprayed bullets, leaving Aiden critically injured. He died at the hospital. No one else in the car was injured.

According to the documents, Aiden was shot three times and a gunshot wound to the back is what killed him.

Police have accused Henry Hayes IV, 17, of firing shots that killed Aiden while targeting a member of Aiden’s family in what was described as an ongoing gang rivalry.

"We should be motivated to come together and take action to improve public safety without our city," Curry said.

Family of slain Jacksonville toddler hopes to soon have justice
"We are just looking forward to it being over, living through this trial and getting our convictions," said Rhonda McDowell, Aiden's grandmother. "We are just taking it one day at a time with the love and support of the community."

Hayes and Richardson will be tried together but each will have his own jury.

Judge denies defense motion ahead of toddler's murder trial
A Duval County judge denied a motion for a jury questionnaire Thursday before the trial of a Jacksonville man charged with murdering a toddler begins.

The motion was put in place by the attorney of Henry Hayes. Both Hayes and Kquame Richardson are scheduled to go to trial June 25 for the death of 22-month-old Aiden McClendon.

Judge to close courtroom as gang witnesses testify in murder trial
Prosecutors said the two witnesses in question are known gang members who have been threatened over their testimony, and one was stabbed in prison. The mother of one of the witnesses was also attacked when her house was shot up by someone, prosecutors said.

To protect those witnesses and their families, Whittington agreed to close the courtroom to the public during their testimony, which is expected to focus on the gang activity that sparked the shooting. He ruled that the news media can remain in the courtroom, but must either use only the audio of the testimony or blur the faces of the two witnesses.
