Wow she doesn't look very Asian to me at all from the sketch. My first thought was she looked Native American.

I'm wondering if by "Asian" they might mean Indian / Pakistani / Persian. I know of one instance where some skeletal remains of a woman found in a barrel in Kansas City were said to be Asian. Turned out she was Persian. Those facial features in the drawing are certainly not Asian in the common understanding of that term.

It says Wht/AsianFem in the title, but the description says "The decedent is Native American and/or Caucasian/Hispanic."

    Other description says:

I think she is probably Native American. I wonder if anyone has reached out to the Gila River Indian Community.

Here is a Google Earth photo of the area. The Gila Crossing Community School is just south of the intersection of 51st and Dust Devil. It's a K-8 school (link below), so she was not likely a student there, and her identity would probably be known if she were.

The blue blanket looks to me like a baby blanket. Could the baby have been with her even though there is no evidence? Did she go riding and give birth? I assume she was riding the horse, had an accident and it fell on her. But why did no one claim her when she was found? Cultural and language barriers ?

    Such a sad mystery.

Here is another thread listing other bodies found on the Gila River Reservation. They are all men except the victim on this thread. She is listed as being between 30-50 years old, quite a difference from 17-20!

The doe network page lists a much higher age frame, 30-50. The page hasn't been updated since 2012 though, so I am assuming the late teen/young adult estimated age is more accurate.

The blankets could have been used on the horse.

Why would the horse skeleton lie on top of her?

I can imagine the horse falling and crushing her but that wouldn't kill the horse. It would get up, would it not?

Were they both shot I wonder?

Horses can have a head injury/brain injury like any other mammal. Trainers & riders really, really dislike horses with a tendency to rear, which means throw their neck & head up while lifting front feet from the ground, because the rider is likely to go over backwards with the horse landing on top. If the horse then hits its' head, the likely injured rider has about 1000 unconscious pounds on top. Not pleasant.

When the horse goes back to all four legs, or you can balance & push the horse down, you're likely to have an impressive black eye or bloody nose. Bucking is generally easier to ride through.

Rearing is a typical reaction to a rattlesnake. If If If isn't our favorite thing, but if the horse heard a rattlesnake, reared, came down on the rider, you'd find this two-skeleton arrangement. If there is a snake in this scenario, the horse may have been struck by the snake, although the venom is slow.

No saddle & no baby. LE should find out from the tribe & the state about any babies removed from their mothers in this time frame.

Can the thread title be changed, since this is so likely a Native American woman?

Thank you for the horse information, Laughing. A rattlesnake seems quite a likely reason for the horse to rear and fall, even if the snake didn't bite.

I sent a pm to a mod asking that the thread title be changed. I can't find mention of her being Asian in the listings, but I could have missed it.

In researching a little, I found that gang activity was a huge problem on the AZ reservations at that time. There were some terrible things going on, including deliberately impregnating the sisters of rival gang members, callous murders, etc. This young woman may not have been a direct victim (although the baby made me wonder) but fear may have prevented her family from making a report that she was missing. I agree that reaching out to the tribe about a baby being taken from its mother is an excellent idea.

This is a very long article and includes the information about impregnating young girls as well as the fear that was prevalent at the time.

Could she have been using the blankets as some form of bareback pad? It doesn't sound particularly safe to me, but some horses have a more prominent spine which makes riding them bareback uncomfortable. I wonder if a bridle was found with the horse.

I had an accident in high school when a horse spooked and bolted and caught the edge of a ditch. He went down and ended up rolling on top of me. Horse was fine, I walked away, but I could see depending on the incline or severity of the fall how both horse and rider could end up dead or injured enough to not be able to walk away without assistance.
