"A protest in support of Oregon ranchers facing jail time for arson has escalated into an armed takeover of a federal wildlife building and an anti-government call-to-arms." More at the link...

(CNN)Armed anti-government protesters have taken over a building in a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon, accusing officials of unfairly punishing ranchers who refused to sell their land.

One them is Ammon Bundy, the 40-year-old son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who is well-known for anti-government action.

Among the occupiers are several members of the Bundy family, whose patriarch — Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy — was involved in an armed standoff with government agents over grazing rights in 2014.

“The Refuge represents a crucial stop along the Pacific Flyway and offers resting, breeding, and nesting habitat for hundreds of migratory birds and other wildlife,” a statement on the site says. “Many of the species migrating through or breeding here are highlighted as priority species in national bird conservation plans.”

KANAB, Utah -- Sympathizers of the Oregon armed standoff rolled into this desert town Friday in pickup trucks flying American flags, ready to mourn an Arizona rancher and occupation spokesman who was killed last week in a confrontation with authorities.

The trucks filled the parking lot of a Mormon church where a viewing ceremony preceded the funeral for Robert "LaVoy" Finicum. One vehicle had a flyer with a picture of Finicum and the words, "Murdered by the FBI," while another was scrawled with one of the rancher's favorite sayings: "By dang, I'm mad."

BURNS -- Negotiations with the last four occupiers of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in southeast Oregon continued Friday as a militia's weekend plan to escort them out was canceled.

The new lighted sign changes from “Road Closed” to “No Unlawful Entry” to “Subject To Arrest.”

It’s the latest indication that the coalition of law enforcement guarding the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge have no interest in additional militia members, media or curious members of the public getting within five miles of the headquarters.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A federal grand jury has indicted Ammon Bundy and some of the men and women who joined him at the armed occupation of an Oregon wildlife refuge, authorities said Wednesday.

Most of the article is about Blaine Cooper, and its worth a read, imo.

“Blaine Cooper, an Arizona man who often appeared with video gear alongside Ammon Bundy during the now more than monthlong occupation, has not been arrested or indicted.

Cooper said in an interview Friday he wasn't sure why. "Luck maybe," he said.

Cooper also noted he had not been armed.

"I did mainly media updates for Ammon," he said. "I think I can make my point without violence or intimidation."

“Mel Bundy, another of Cliven Bundy's 14 children, attended the memorial and the concert later Friday evening. He was in Burns, though less visible than his brothers.

Occupier Wes Kjar helped organize a procession on horseback.

Brand Thornton blew into a spiral-shaped shofar, a kind of trumpet made from an animal horn, outside the Mormon stake center where the events were held. He also brought the horn to Burns and to Bunkerville, Nevada, in 2014.

None of the three has been indicted.”

Oregon standoff: LaVoy Finicum memorial torn down, reward offered for answers

Soper was planning to conduct a memorial with other coalition members by Finicum's cross at 1 p.m. Saturday, but those plans changed after he saw what happened.

"We're going to go buy every damn flag in this town and hang [the cross] back up," he said.

Soper said he would offer $500 to anybody with information about who tore the memorial down. He said he had no idea who might have done it.

"Someone that's un-Christian, that's for damn sure," he said.

More like they got word of the plans Soper had last night.

I'm bringing over this article posted by i.b.nora on the previous thread. It's an extremely important read about how dangerous these militants are. I've been pounding this drum since the first thread and I won't apologize for being boring. :) Yes, militants/extremists of any ilk or nationality are dangerous, but these people have lived in this country for generations and are able to blend in and recruit easily, as we have seen. They are not "outsiders" who easily arouse distracting patriotic anti-immigrant sentiment. They are neighbors, workmates, regular people...until they act on their distorted beliefs. I have no solutions to offer...just information so no one will be surprised about what they do next. :(

It kinda makes you wonder if Blaine Cooper was an insider.

Referencing my post above about the danger these groups present, here is the plan to "infiltrate" local organizations.

He then sketched out how Oath Keepers and others should infiltrate local institutions as a way to build trust with neighbors, and as a way of recruiting—what Rhodes called “shopping for talent.” In addition to targeting volunteer fire departments and churches, Rhodes recommended infiltrating neighborhood watch groups, search and rescue and other first responder groups, and VFW groups.

From thread #2.

"I hear you, but I think the priority, irrespective of cost, is rescuing the artifacts and their context, and restoring the site. And so, I think that the most judicious course of action would be to have the best qualified experts be paid appropriately to work on restoring the site, and that all of the costs of doing so should be incurred by those who were responsible for the damage and destruction. I think that's only fair and just."

I believe we're on the same page....Yes, the perps should be liable for the costs they've incurred in damaging Native American artifacts (and likely treading on them underfoot). Yes, artifact restoration takes expert professionals. But the Malheur Lake area (I can't recall which US Agency, but either the refuge or National Forest) has a history of using amateur archaeology volunteers. These folks are typically used for grid searches and making test pits. They are well supervised. They almost always have prior experience and know what they're doing (it's quite difficult to get on a team). They map surface artifacts and strategically dig pits just to get an idea of what might be below. These kinds of volunteers might be very useful for gridding the terrain the militias stomped on, mapping artifacts so damage can be recorded, and helping to estimate damages by identifying and categorizing objects. These are important steps in restoration. That's all I'm suggesting.

And you, too, can be a volunteer like this! Maybe not at Malheur, but there are many other sites in the country (and abroad) where volunteer archaeologists are needed. And yes, you train on the job.... In the mud, dirt, brambles, poison ivy, dead mice, ancient poop..

Why is a Christian cross even permitted to be erected on a federal highway? This is public property. Not only that, this highway is hugged by national forests. Anyone who tears the cross down should be well within their rights to do so. There would be a huge stink if there was a Star of David there or a Crescent and Star or a broom with a black cat on the side of the highway.

I wrote an email to the Oregonian that said this, 'cos I'm fed up:

Regarding the cross erected to mark the spot where militia member Finicum was shot by police officers….. Could you comment on why a Christian cross would even be permitted on a Federal Highway? Surrounded by national forest, no less?

Typically, overt religious symbols cannot be displayed on public property. There would be outrage if anyone had erected a memorial with a Star of David, Crescent and Star, or besom and black cat as its central feature.

Surely, anyone could rightfully remove a cross erected on a Federal right of way, like the highway between Burns and John Day? This idea that if it’s Christian it’s not only okay, but superior, has no business on public property and is a violation of the civil rights of those of us who don’t subscribe to that credo.
