PORT ST. LUCIE — With a couple of keyboard taps, residents who stroll into the city's two main police station buildings can research whether sex offenders and sexual predators live in their neighborhood. This week, two computerized kiosks allowing residents to view information about sex offenders and predators — including photos and minimal information about their offenses — were installed in the lobbies of the police stations on Airoso and Rosser boulevards, Sgt. Hey, they should be able to do that from home or a library, too.
The sex offender registry has always bee available at local police stations--just in paper form. Which is why it was inconvenient and rarely used. You had to go the cops to find out your neighbor was a rapist, not the other way around.
