Man arrested in B.C. in 1990 Ontario sex assault after DNA breaks cold case, Feb2016

WINDSOR, Ont. -- Police in Windsor, Ont., say DNA has led to charges against a 54-year-old man who was living in B.C. in a sexual assault cold case.

Police say forensic analysis of evidence at the time of the September 1990 break and enter and sexual assault in Windsor was of little help to their investigation.

Investigators say the Centre of Forensic Sciences contacted them last month to say they had a DNA hit from the National Offender Databank.

RCMP arrested a suspect in Burnaby, B.C., on Feb. 2 and he has been returned to Windsor, where police say they are looking into other incidents that occurred in 1990 between June and September.

The former Windsor man is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter, unlawful confinement, intent to commit an indictable offence, having face disguised, and uttering threats.

Windsor police crack 25-year-old sex attack case
Police first began investigating in Sept. 12, 1990, after receiving a call about a break-in and sexual assault in the 1700 block of Marentette Avenue.

According to Windsor Star records, a 26-year-old woman was alone at the home when a man forced open a wire screen and climbed through an open dining room window around 3:20 a.m.

Police said at the time that the attacker wore a mask but it somehow came off, allowing the victim to get a look at him.

John Thomas Wuschenny, 54, a former resident of Windsor, is charged with sexual assault with a weapon, break and enter, unlawful confinement, intent to commit an indictable offence, having face disguised and uttering threats.

Police are now looking into other incidents that occurred between June and September 1990. Cox was quick to add it’s “way too early” to suggest there are any connections.

But about a week after the Marentette attack in 1990, with no suspects, police said they did believe it was one man terrorizing women in the city’s east end. Between June 20 and Sept. 12 of 1990, there were six cases where a man broke into homes and forced sexual acts on women. There were also more than 10 cases of other break-ins, prowlers and suspicious people during the same time period.

Most of the incidents took place in the Albert Street and Drouillard Road area, except for the one in the 1700 block of Marentette.

“Our theory is that there’s one person responsible,” Det. Dave Roberts said in 1990.
If anyone has any information, as little as they think it might be, it could be a piece of the missing puzzle,” said Cox.
