Heh. Employing the "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" caution. :shush:

Oh no! Praying for his family and friends as well as the Court and our nation. RIP Antonin.

I wonder if we'll have an Abe Fortas scenario where the Senate will not allow the President to make an appointment in his final months in office.

Hope not! Obama should get to make another appointment.

Wow! What were the odds of Scalia being the next SCJ to be replaced. (Note to Ted Cruz- in your dreams, lad).

I can't help but wonder what he was doing there. Big Bend is pretty much the end of the earth.

Interesting article about him & his service on the court. And speculation about filling the vacancy.

"The U.S. Marshals Service in Washington confirmed Scalia's death at a private residence in the Big Bend area of West Texas. Spokeswoman Donna Sellers said Scalia had gone to his room the previous evening and was found dead Saturday morning after he did not appear for breakfast."
"Scalia was part of a 5-4 conservative majority - with one of the five, Anthony Kennedy, sometimes voting with liberals on the court. Scalia's death leaves President Barack weighing when to nominate a successor, a decision that immediately sparked a political struggle drawing in Congress and the presidential candidates."

RIP Justice Scalia.

Big Bend area of Texas, the end of the earth? In a good way? I've been fortunate to spend time there. Absolutely positively gorgeous, imo, and a great time of year to be there.

He was staying at * http://www.cibolocreekranch.com/. Go to gallery w pix of the three restored forts, now guest accommodations, and the 30,000 acres it's on.
http://www.cibolocreekranch.com/gallery/. Newscasters called it a 'luxury resort.' Seems appropriate, imo. It has its own landing strip, 5,300 feet long & 60 feet wide, which can accommodate most private aircraft. Lots of amenities, but for me, the stunning location is spectacular. Not hyperbole.

Further OT: If I don't die in my own bed, Cibolo Creek Ranch or other areas of the Big Bend would be on my top ten list of preferred locations. JM2cts.

"A gray hearse was seen at the entrance to the Cibolo Creek Ranch, near Shafter, on Saturday accompanied by an SUV. The two-car caravan pulled out onto U.S. 67, which runs between wide stretches of dry, ochre winter fields. A man sat guard near a brown stone wall at the entrance to the ranch, the West Texas mountains rising in the background." bbm

I have a close relative who feels the same as you. Personally, I just do NOT feel the same way. I prefer palm trees & ocean. The desert makes me feel depressed.

This is the end of an era.

RIP Your Honor

"Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Saturday that the Senate should wait until a new president is elected to confirm a replacement for Justice Antonin Scalia, whose sudden death Saturday shook Washington and threatened to reshape the 2016 presidential race.

Democrats said that with 11 months left in President Obama’s tenure, the Senate has enough time — and indeed an obligation — to confirm a replacement. Sen. Harry Reid, the top Democrat in the chamber, said it would be “shameful” to put off a replacement that long.

Mr. Obama said he would in fact make a nomination, forcing the issue on the GOP-led Senate."

Do they really think they can blow off the constitution like that?! Does it mean nothing to them?! DH is rip-roaring mad!
