Australia - Two Female Backpackers attacked at Salt Creek, SA, 9 Feb 2016

Backpackers allegedly kidnapped, raped by Adelaide man at isolated Coorong campsite

    Updated February 12, 2016 17:27:05

    Key points:

    • Two women in their 20s were treated for serious injuries and remain in hospital
    • Police say the women met the alleged attacker shortly before the alleged ordeal
    • The women, backpacking from overseas, had planned to stay at Salt Creek for a night
    • Police were called to the Coorong National Park south-east of Adelaide at 6:30pm on Tuesday after receiving reports of a serious assault at Salt Creek.

An Adelaide man has faced court charged with allegedly raping, assaulting, kidnapping and attempting to murder two young foreign backpackers at an isolated stretch of the Coorong National Park.

Two women in their early 20s were flown to the Flinders Medical Centre with serious injuries and remain in hospital in a stable condition.

Superintendent James Blandford said the two women had been driving "with a newly-acquainted person" and "effectively found themselves in a situation that has turned out to be scary and physically bad for them".

"One of the victims was able to run away and came across some people fishing in the area," he said.

Police will investigate outstanding missing person's cases in Australia following alleged Coorong 'kidnap, attempted murder' case

Every outstanding missing person's case in Australia will be re-examined after a man was charged with the 'horrific' kidnap and attempted murder of two female backpackers, police have revealed.

It comes after pictures emerged of the bedroom of the man suspected of trying to kill the two girls in a remote South Australian national park near Salt Creek on Tuesday night.

The pictures come as the newly set up Taskforce Coorong updated the public on its investigation so far.

"Speculation is rife in the community and the press, and rightly so.

"It's prudent, if nothing else, to invest the background of this offender. The man is before the courts with a serious offence and is entitled to the presumption of innocence.

"His name will remain suppressed at least until committal proceedings are finalised but I don't think its appropriate to detail this person's criminal history," Acting Asst Commissioner Barr added.

7 News revealed yesterday that the suspect was already in police sights as detectives had already raided his southern suburbs home several times in the past year seizing items of interest.

This is a bit confusing, so his identity can be discussed in other states but not SA?

Same here Kyja. Read it then went back after looking here and now I can't access it.

I took away from it the same as you. Identity suppressed in SA only.

I don't know about you, but this one looks like there is a lot more going on. Brazil and Germany are even pretty quiet about what happened to their citizens.

Major suppression ...........potential serial killer? It wouldn't surprise me from the level of secrecy here.

The fact he was already under investigation and then the release of the bedroom pic's makes me think they have found something fairly sinister in one of they're previous raids at his property. I could be way off but I have a feeling a whole heap of horrible history is about to be uncovered regarding this creep. Wish I could work out who he is!

I might be missing something here, but can anyone enlighten me as to what I should be seeing or looking for in the photos of the bedroom and why they've been released? Or is it perhaps to jog the memory of other past victims?

I don't think police have given a reason for the release of the bedroom pic. I'm presuming they actually have a reason but who knows.

There doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary in it, but then I am looking at it through old eyes!

It's almost as if it was supposed to be, 'Ahha! Here's the bedroom! Just look at that!' Except I'm not sure what to look for or what is significant.

AU - Two Female Backpackers attacked at Salt Creek S.A. - 09 February 2016

Yesterday, at the urging of Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Ian Press, SC, the Adelaide Magistrates Court gagged publication of:

ALL photographs of the man, even if pixelated, and information from his social media accounts.

ANYTHING that shows, or even hints at, locations or identities related to his home, family and personal possessions.

ANY discussion of other offences the man may have committed.

The orders apply only in SA and do not restrict people interstate and overseas from knowing about the man and his alleged victims, who were foreign backpackers.

    <modsnip>

His name has been mentioned several times in several places along with pics from his Facebook and links to other sites he was on. It was pretty eerie looking at his Facebook. His family have also asked for info to be taken down as you could see who his family are by his profile, people had been contacting them and harassing them.
I'd better my bottom dollar on a LONG history and previous offences. IMO

Yes, it's ok in other states and countries but not here from what I can gather it's weird.

STATE OF SUPPRESSION ERODES YOUR RIGHT TO KNOW

SA is known far and wide as “the suppression state”

In a city that once suppressed even the colour of the Snowtown bank vault barrels and hushed up the flavour of a would-be killer’s poisoned sandwich....

Magistrate David Whittle, ordered the suppressions be reconsidered when the man enters his pleas.
