North Bay attorney in Lopez case goes missing

Santa Rosa, California -
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Department is searching for a missing man who is an attorney involved in the high profile Andy Lopez shooting case.

Steven Mitchell was last seen on Saturday.

There was no sign of him until Sunday, when his car was found on the Sonoma Coast. The 56-year-old attorney is a Stanford graduate and worked at a Santa Rosa law office.

The Sheriff's office says his car was discovered Sunday at a parking lot south of Goat Rock State Beach near Jenner.

"Right now we don't have any information to believe that anybody else took his vehicle there. No foul play is suspected so we're going on the premise that he drove his vehicle there himself," Lt. Ed Hoerner told KTVU.

But why he drove there and what happened to him after that are a mystery to investigators and to Mitchell's family.

"They expected him back by now. We know he was going to be in the Santa Rosa area and we did not have information that he was going to the coast and the family doesn't know where he might be at this point," said Hoerner.

California State Parks rangers discovered Mitchell’s 2005 Acura on Sunday morning, parked above a beach on a coastal bluff south of Jenner. A cellphone and clothing were retrieved from the area, but investigators could find no other clues, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office.

A ground and air search was conducted Sunday along the coast but scaled back Monday to a single deputy. The coastal search was suspended Tuesday morning, pending new information.

Mitchell was reported missing on Saturday night by his wife, who said her husband had been gone all day without checking in, something that was highly unusual.

Early Sunday morning, his wife reported that Mitchell’s cellphone had been used last in the Bodega Bay area. Just before 8 a.m., state parks rangers found his unoccupied car south of Jenner, parked on Carlevaro Way, above Furlong Gulch Beach.

An extensive search ensued by sheriff’s deputies, search and rescue volunteers and the sheriff’s helicopter crew. Other than items of clothing and the phone, they found no sign of the man. Sheriff’s officials have said there was no indication he was the victim of foul play.

A detective was attempting to retrace Mitchell’s steps since he was last seen and find any new leads.

Police declined to discuss details of the investigation, including where the clothing and phone were found, what items of clothing were found and whether the case was a possible suicide.

Suicide. :( A note was found.

An air and ground search turned up nothing. At some point, a note was uncovered that confirmed Mitchell planned to kill himself, sheriff’s Sgt. Cecile Focha said.
Focha would not say when or where the note was found or describe its contents. She also would not say whether it revealed why Mitchell would commit suicide.
“Based on the totality of the information we have, it is clear that he intended to take his life,” Focha said Friday.

Stuff like this breaks my heart. Knowing so many are suffering so badly and are in such despair.
