"To passersby, her small screams sounded like cat cries.

The baby girl — not more than two days old — had been buried alive, authorities said, beneath shards of “asphalt and rubble” near a bike path in Compton, a city in South Central Los Angeles. When two women found the newborn late Friday afternoon, her voice was weak and her skin was cold".

She is 33. So she damn well knew better. If she had been a teenager, it would still be horrific but at least a little more understandable. Ugh.

Washington gave birth at an area hospital Nov. 23, according to sheriff's officials. She was released from the hospital three days later, on Thanksgiving. Investigators believe she abandoned the child the following morning.

A few days later, detectives were able to identify Washington through hospital records, and she was arrested in Compton on Thursday. Washington told police that she hid the pregnancy from her friends and family and panicked after giving birth, sheriff's officials said.

So the baby was born in a hospital. She could have just left her in the hospital! Hence the attempted murder charges.

December 2018:

Porche Washington cradled her newborn daughter, Aspen, in her arms.

Washington’s life to that point had been marred by drugs and homelessness and unplanned pregnancies. She knew she couldn’t keep her daughter.

So there Washington stood, in front of a Compton fire station around Thanksgiving 2015, ready to do the right thing, ready to drop off her child. She could just walk away, no questions asked.

But she couldn’t.

“She had bonded with her at the hospital,” said Detective Jennifer Valuenzela, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy who would investigate what followed.

Instead, Washington took Aspen and got high.

Within days, Aspen lay crying in a pothole....

Two weeks ago, Aspen was one of about 200 kids to formally get new families, during a National Adoption Day ceremony in Monterey Park. A week after that, she celebrated her third birthday.
