Police Seek Men In Decades-Old Cold Case Death
Woman's Body Found On Clouet Street In 1994

UPDATED 6:34 AM CDT Apr 27, 2012

The family of Barbara Fornea has been reliving her death since 1994. The mother of three and Louisiana transplant was found dead on Clouet Street by a local worker on the morning of May 12. Police said she was nude, bound and had been manually strangled.

Police said there have been several cases in and around that time with females, both black and white, found manually strangled. But in this case, Detective Winston Harbin, of the New Orleans Police Department Cold Case Squad, said he believes Fornea knew her attacker or attackers.

Harbin said he believes Fornea was killed in Jefferson Parish and then her body was dumped near the river on Clouet Street. He said the last place she was seen was at a bar called the Whistle Stop on Airline Highway in Kenner the night before her death.

"The victim walked into the bar with two unknown black males, who began a conversation with two known patrons of the bar, Jason Canby and Leroy Theriot," Harbin said.

All four left the bar about 25 minutes after that, but not before Fornea led the bartender, a woman named Donnis, to believe something was wrong, Harbin said.

"When she tried to get the victim to tell her what was wrong, the two black males allegedly corralled her at the bar and she was unable to speak," Harbin said.

"This didn't happen by accident," Detective Winston Harbin with the New Orleans Cold Case Section said. "This was an effort on their part to kill this lady, and they have to be brought to justice."

Fornea's body was found in the 500 block of Clouet Street. However, detectives don't believe that was where she was killed.

The investigation led officers to a bar on Airline Highway that was then known as The Plantation lounge. Harbin said Fornea walked into the bar with two men the night before her body was found and sat next to two other men. The four later walked out together and Harbin believes Fornea did not go willingly.

That was the last time anyone saw Fornea alive. Harbin is now looking for several people who may have had contact with her that night including, Leroy Theriot, James Whitten, Patrick Junious and Brenda Sullivan.

He hopes they'll have information to finally track down Fornea's killer.
