I was unable to find a list anywhere of parents who killed their child and then covered it up by saying the child had gone missing or been abducted, so I've started my own. There are many, many more children still to add to this list :( Please feel free to help me out by doing a brief write-up of any other cases you know of and adding them here. I thought it would be useful if we ever want to look for patterns or precedents.

Richard J. Gelles, a professor of sociology and psychology at the University of Rhode Island who is an expert on family violence, says the National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse estimates that 700 mothers kill their children each year. But only 50 or so fabricate tales of abductions, he said, citing figures from the National Center on Missing and Exploited Children in Washington.

James Johnson (aka James Dupree Lewis), 4 years old, Pennsylvania, disappeared in 1991. Maurice Marcell Martin, the boyfriend of James' mother Debra Johnson, said that James disappeared from the car when he left him alone for a few minutes, but he was later convicted of the third-degree murder of the boy and in 1992 he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for accidentally killing James. He had punished James for urinating on the kerb outside the house, and the prosecutuion argued that James died of a subdural hematoma after being hit on the head. Maurice Martin was released from prison in 2012, at the age of 46.

Because James's body never was found, the Commonwealth offered circumstantial proof of his death, including his age, the fact that no one saw him at the supermarket parking lot, the peculiar circumstances of the preceding two days wherein James was not seen conscious or awake by anyone, the inconsistent nature of appellant's statements to police after James's "disappearance," and the failure of hundreds of search volunteers to turn up any evidence of James's whereabouts.
In order to establish the malice necessary to prove murder, the Commonwealth provided testimony from several sources that appellant repeatedly abused James, both physically and mentally.

After his trial, many also blamed the mother. After all, she knew of the extreme abuse and stood pat, they said.
Charging her criminally, however, wasn't an option for police.
"Unfortunately, we needed her cooperation to put the evidence against Maurice," Chalfant said.

Rilya Wilson, 4 years old, 2000, Florida. Rilya disappeared in December 2000, but she wasn't reported missing until April 2002. Rilya's foster mother (who was also allegedly her biological paternal grandmother) Geralyn Graham said that someone claiming to be from the DCF had taken Rilya for an evaluation in Jan 2011, and never returned her. A social worker, Deborah Muskelly, pleaded guilty to official misconduct for falsifying records of visits to check on Rilya whilst she was missing.

Foster mother Geralyn Graham was convicted in 2013 of aggravated child abuse and kidnapping and sentenced to 55 years in prison. Graham allegedly admitted to a fellow inmate that she smothed Rilya and buried her body. A mistrial was declared on the murder charge when one juror voted not to convict. Rilya's body was never found.

Ricky Holland, 7 years old, July 2005, Michigan. Adoptive parents Tim and Lisa Holland reported Ricky as being missing from his bedroom, and said he had run away from home before. He had been found in neighbours homes in the past, eating their food because his parents were starving him. In January 2006, Tim Holland led LE to Ricky's remains, which had been put into a garbage bag and thrown in a swamp. Tim Holland said his wife had beaten the boy and hit him in the head with a tack hammer, and he had died a week later. He was sentenced to 30 - 60 years in prison for second degree murder. Lisa Holland was found guilty of first-degree felony murder and first-degree child abuse and sentenced to life in prison.

Marcus Fiesel, 2 years old, 2006, Ohio. Marcus' foster mother Liz Carroll claimed Marcus disappeared when she fainted at a fair. She held a press conference pleading for the boy's return. In reality she, her husband and a friend duct-taped and restrained the boy, then went away for the weekend and left him to die in a hot closet. Traces of his incinerated remains were found in the fireplace of a derelict house. Liz Carroll was sentenced to 59 years to life in prison for murder and other charges, David Carroll was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison and Amy Baker was given immunity for testifying against the other two.

Colton Brandt Turner, 2 years old, reported missing in Sept 2014, Texas after a family friend told LE she had seen pictures of the boy on facebook with suspicious bruises and cuts. LE spoke to his mother, Meagan Work, who gave several conflicting stories about his whereabouts (he was with a friend, he was abducted when she left him in her car for a few minutes, she gave him away to a stranger...). LE also questioned her boyfriend, Michael Brandt Turner, who soon admitted that Colton was dead and led LE to the boy's shallow grave. Turner said that Colton had died in July. Turner and Work said that Colton had died after falling and hitting his head whilst being beaten. In 2016 Michael Turner pleaded guilty to two count of tampering with evdence (for burying Colton's body) and one count of 2nd degree Reckless Injury to a Child by Omission. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Meagan Work is still awaiting trial.

Alexis "Lexie" Agyepong-Glover, 13 years old, 2009, Virginia. Her (adoptive) mother reported her missing and pleaded in the media for her return, saying that Lexie had autism, developmental delay and other issues (this was disputed by Lexie's former councellors, who said that Lexie had reactive attachment disorder but was a bright, loving girl).

Her mother, Alfreedia Gregg-Glover, reported Lexie missing two days before the girl's body was found; police later discovered that Gregg-Glover had left Lexie in the creek to die days before. Gregg-Glover pleaded guilty to charges of felony murder, felony child abuse, and filing a false police report in July.

Lexie had asked many people for help before her death, telling that her mother starved and beat her, and wanted to kill her. Teachers and neighbours had reported abuse to the authorities. Her mother told authorities that Lexie was a compulsive liar. Alexis died of drowning and hypothermia, but her body had the marks of past and recent abuse and her death was ruled a homicide.

In 2010, Alfreedia Gregg-Glover was sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Zahra Clare Baker (November 16, 1999 - September 24, 2010) was born in Wagga Wagga, Australia and was reported missing on October 9, 2010. Only 10 years old at the time of her death, her dismembered remains were found in November 2010. Because of the crime's gruesome nature and the series of events leading up to her death, Zahra's murder received worldwide media coverage.[1] In September 2011, the victim's stepmother, Elisa Baker, plead guilty to murdering Zahra, and was sentenced to eighteen years in prison. She was subsequently given an additional 10 years in 2013 for drug related charges

I'd add Bryeon Hunter and Dontrell Melvin. Both have threads here :(

Bella Neveah Amoroso Bond (August 18, 2012 – May or June 2015), previously known as the Deer Island Jane Doe and "Baby Doe",was an American child found dead in a plastic bag on the shore of Deer Island in Boston, Massachusetts on June 25, 2015.[12] Authorities pursued investigation into discovering who the child was until her identification in September 2015.

Aveion Malik Lewis, 2 years old, 2010, Virginia. An Amber Alert was issued when Aveion's mother and step-father reported that he had been abducted from their home. Stepfather claimed that at least 3 men invaded the home, knocked him unconscious and when he awoke Aveion was missing and the 4 year old child was tied up.

While the search for Aveion continued, many had stated their initial doubts regarding the step-father’s story as well as his demeanor.

Some of the statements that Brandon Lockett made did not ring true with many readers. Comments have been made on television programs and Internet forums regarding Brandon Lockett’s demeanor as well. There were also parallels between Brandon Lockett’s account of the kidnapping and the Jon Benet Ramsey case.

Though the family lived in the projects in Virginia, Lockett had claimed a ransom note was left on the back of a bill that the kidnappers found in the home. The family did not have money, yet the ransom note was for $10,000. There was also no additional information or further contact, where the money was to be left or deposited.

Days later, Aveion's stepfather Brandon Lockett had admitted to police that the boy was dead, and two weeks later his body was found in a landfill. Cause of death could not be determined, although the body showed signs of abuse and neglect.

But they don't need that to press murder charges against his stepfather, Brandon Lockett, and his mother, Morgan Lockett, Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Sandra Workman said.

"The cause of death ultimately is for the jury to decide," Workman said. "We don't intend to invade the province of the jury by saying that Aveion died of X."

The stepfather and the mother, Morgan Lockett, were both charged with murder in February 2010.

In Jan 2012, Morgan Lockett was sentenced to 40 years in prison, after pleading no-contact to 2nd degree murder and child abuse. Brandon Lockett was sentenced to 50 years in prison for 2nd degree murder and child abuse.

Malachi Magana, two and a half years old, 2009, California.
Mother Belinda Magana reported that Malachi had gone missing from the park. But in fact, she badly scalded him, and then she and boyfriend Naresh Narine beat him with their hands or a belt over the next couple of days when his crying or moaning disturbed them. Cause of death was either blunt-force trauma to his head, or sepsis from untreated scalding injuries. They buried him in a shallow grave in Mother's Day.

They called 911 and, in calm voices, described how Malachi went missing. Police, bloodhounds and a helicopter with a PA system alerted the neighborhood about the missing child.
“Everyone is frantically looking for Malachi except for Belinda Magana and Naresh Narine,” Calhoun said.
Within hours, the story unraveled, first with Magana talking to investigators. “She tells this story and takes herself out of it, blaming it all on Mr. Narine,” and she led investigators to the boy’s body, Calhoun said.

In 2015, they were both found guilty of first- degree murder, torture, aggravated mayhem and assault on a child resulting in great bodily injury, and jurors found true a special circumstance allegation of inflicting torture in the commission of a murder.
They were sentenced to death.

OMG. Heartbreaking. There are no words. HOW can any parent do those things to their own children?

Trial starting shortly:

Timothy Wiltsey, 5 years old, 1991, New Jersey. Mother Michelle Lodzinski said that she left her son standing in line for a ride at a carnival for a few minutes whilst she went to buy a soda, and when she returned he was gone. She changed this story several times, inventing various abductors. No credible witnesses recalled seeing Timothy at the carnival.

Timothy's remains were found 11 months after he disappeared, close to an industrial estate where his mother had once worked. In 1994, in an odd twist, she was arrested and eventually confessed to lying about being kidnapped by federal agents, to avoid appearing before s grand jury in Timothy's case.

The case went cold for years, but in 2014 Lodzinski was charged with murder. Jury selection has begun for her trial.

Christina Holt, 7 years old, 1994, Florida.

In one hand, Pauline Zile clutched a stuffed animal. With the other, she wiped the tears streaming from her red, swollen eyes.

Looking into the TV camera, she made a near-hysterical plea for the return of her 7-year-old daughter, claiming Christina Holt had been abducted from a restroom at a flea market.

A couple of weeks after Christina was reported missing, her stepfather Walter John Zile led police to the body, which was buried behind a convenience store. He had beaten and suffocated her - he said her death was an accident, he had just intended to discipline her. Walter Zile and Pauline Zile were sentenced to life in prison without parole for murder - Pauline's murder conviction was for failing to protect her daughter from Walter.

Seth Kehoe, age 2, 2008, Iowa.
Michelle Lynn Kehoe knocked on a neighbour's door, bleeding from the neck, and said that a man had killed her two sons and tried to kill her. Police found the two boys with their throats cut. But Michelle had miscalculated - the older boy, aged 7, had only passed out, and was still alive when police found him. He was found sitting in the family van, hugging his knees to his chest, staring at the pond where Seth's body lay. Seth had a first aid kit next to his body - his brother explained that he had left it there after trying to save his brother. He told them that his mother was the one who had hurt him - duct taping his eyes, nose and mouth and then cutting his throat.

In 2009 Michelle Kehoe was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. She was sentenced to life without parole.

Kiesha Weippeart, 6 years old, 2010, Sydney, Australia.

Abrahams beat her daughter to death sometime in mid-July 2010 and then allowed the little girl to die by failing to call an ambulance or provide any medical care.

A few days later, on July 18, 2010, she and her partner, Robert Smith, dragged the little girl's body, which had been placed in a suitcase, into the bush and buried her.

Two weeks later she made a frantic triple-0 call, claiming that her daughter had gone missing that morning.

The call sparked a major search by hundreds of police and SES volunteers, spurred on by Abrahams' public, emotional pleas for help.

Within a day, police determined that Keisha had not been seen by anyone since early July, and focused their attention on Abrahams and Smith.
Kiesha's body was found in bushland months later, and she was found to have died from repeated blows to the head. Abrahams reportedly hated Kiesha because she looked like her biological father. After her murder, Abrahams and Smith went out and bought toys for the girl to make it look like she was loved.

Robert Smith, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and accessory to murder and was sentenced to a maximum of 16 years' jail.
In 2013, Abrahams was sentenced to 16 - 22 years in prison for murder.

SHANIYA DAVIS

Mother gave her beautiful little girl to her crack dealer, who took her to a motel, brutalized her, and dumped her body in a field like trash. To this day, I can't look at Shaniya's picture without weeping.

Antoinette Nicole Davis, 29, entered Alford pleas to second-degree murder, human trafficking, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree sex offense, felony child abuse with prostitution, child abuse involving a sex act, sexual servitude, indecent liberties with a child and conspiracy to commit sex offense of a child. She was sentenced to between 210 and 261 months in prison.

[...]

Shaniya Davis was reported missing from her Fayetteville home on Nov. 10, 2009. Her body was found six days later in an overgrown field on the Lee-Harnett county line, and an autopsy determined that she had been sexually assaulted and suffocated.

Mario Andrette McNeill, 32, was convicted in May of kidnapping and assaulting Shaniya before killing her, and he was sentenced to death.

Davis apologized to Shaniya's father, Bradley Lockhart, in court Friday, saying she had been too proud to let his family care for their daughter.

"I want to say I did the best I could with my children," she said. "I never said I was a perfect mother, but I was a good mother. I did what I had to provide for them. I did what I had to to make sure they were alright. I didn't have any help from anybody."

Superior Court Judge Jim Ammons tersely disagreed.

"You could have saved your daughter's life, and you did not. You had the time, the opportuity and the means to save Shaniya's life, and you did not," he said. "You are not a good mother. This did not have to happen."

Note: this is one of the few cases I've been able to find where a caretaker appears to have panicked and covered up a genuine accident, and had no intention of harming the child

Natallya Rich, 4 months old, 2015, Missouri.

Bradley admitted he was on drugs such as meth, norco pills, and morphine on the days before and after Natallya died...

Bradley told investigators he was in charge of watching Natallya on Saturday when her mother went to work. He took a nap, and when he woke up, Natallya was unresponsive. Bradley said he tried CPR on the baby, but it did not work. When Brittany came home from work, he told her the baby was sleeping and hid Natallya's body -- in her car seat -- in the crawl space of their basement.

Bradley said he was too afraid to tell anyone.

Cause of death was found to be unsafe sleeping conditions.
Matthew Bradley pleaded guilty to Concealing Death as a Habitual Offender. He was sentenced to no less than 28 months and no more than 7.5 years in prison.

"You could have saved your daughter's life, and you did not. You had the time, the opportuity and the means to save Shaniya's life, and you did not," he said. "You are not a good mother. This did not have to happen."

NC- Amber Alert issued Shaniya Davis, 5, missing from her home 11/10/09

This is the most tragic case I think I've ever followed and I will never, never forget her face as long as I live !

Neveah Janey Gallegos, 3 years old, 2007, Colorado.

Mother Miriam Gallegos called 911 and reported that a red-haired man had snatched Neveah from her arms and driven off with her. Later the same day, under police questioning she admitted that he boyfriend Angel Montoya had told her the girl had just stopped breathing, and they had disposed of her body.
Neveah's body was found by police 3 days later, in a trash bag, covered with an old tyre, a tree stump and other debris.

Gallegos knew that her boyfriend, Angel Ray Montoya, was a registered sex offender. She knew he was accused of choking and hitting another little boy in his care. She knew that days after Montoya gave her daughter a bath, Janet Gallegos rushed her 3-year-old granddaughter to the hospital for vaginal bleeding.
Gallegos and Montoya were released without charge after the autopsy report listed the cause of death as undetermined, but the couple were finally indicted in 2008 after a second opinion said the child had died from asphyxiation.

In 2011 Miriam Gallegos was sentenced to 12 years in prison and five years of parole for child abuse resulting in death.
In 2012 Angel Montoya was sentenced to LWOP for first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death and abuse of a corpse.
