MI - Michigan gun owner: Toddler shooting mom in the head ‘a total accident’

    Michele and Jacob Hanson

    Kentwood, Michigan -
The owner of the gun a toddler found and fired at his mother says the incident was “a total accident.”

Jacob Hanson, 28, is a married father of two young boys and a gun owner who likes to drive around with his gun in the car.

Hanson’s 3-year-old son allegedly grabbed the 9mm subcompact handgun out of the driver’s side compartment car and squeezed off a shot that hit his mother in the back of the head, according to police.

The father reportedly told police that the gun jammed before another shot could be fired.

The incident happened in the middle of the day on Feb. 20 at the family’s home near East Paris Avenue and 60th Street SE.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Thankful that Mom was "not seriously injured and her husband said she was back working within a few days" per ^ link.

"Jacob Hanson, 28, ... likes to drive around with his gun in the car.Hanson’s 3-year-old son allegedly grabbed the 9mm subcompact handgun out of the driver’s side compartment car and squeezed off a shot..."

Some confusing (to me) aspect of ^ article, excerpted from same link:

"According to the Kentwood police report ..., Hanson said he often travels with pistol in the car, but secures the weapon in a holster before placing it in a gun safe along with several other weapons.
However, Hanson told police ... he was in a hurry to visit neighbors who were planning to sell their home and in his haste, he left his gun in the Chevrolet Traverse, the report states." sbm

Q1: What is the ^ "driver’s side compartment car"^ from which 3 y/o "grabbed" gun?
Bad answer: Dashboard niche on driver side? Map-pocket in driver-side door? Center console? Dashboard glove box?
Good but unlikely-to-me-in-this-case answer: A lockable and locked vehicle gun safe, bolted to floor or chained to seat frame.

The U.S. General Accounting Office estimated that 31 percent of accidental deaths caused by firearms might be prevented with the addition of two devices: a child-proof safety lock and a loading indicator.

According to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Center for Injury Research and Prevention, one in three handguns is kept loaded.

The Center reported 73 percent of children younger than age 10 know where parents keep firearms and 36 percent admitted handling the weapons, despite parent reports.

The sad thing is, these are the type of people whom gun control advocates are trying to protect, but they are too stupid to realize it.

Just a accident, as opposed to what? The three year old intending to kill his mother? Or Dad intentionally leaving the gun where the three-year-old had access? Of course it was an accident. What too many people fail to realize is that when someone brings a gun into their home--especially a home with children--the odds of gun-related accidents (not to mention use of the weapon in anger against someone in the hiusehold) ramps up.

Now--given current prohibitions on CDC being able to track and analyze dara related to things like gun ownership and resultant harms--it's hard to get at any notion of causality, or even the scope of the problem. But it is my belief that the folks who believe that gun ownership makes their families safer are deluding themselves. They over-estimate the risk of aggressive strangers with guns and underestimate the risk of accidents and intrafamilial violence.

OK it was an accident, but I still think there needs to something to be said about idiots with guns. You can't "not think", "forget" or be "to busy" to be safe with a firearm, especially when you've got little ones running around.

    Regarding this Florida 'incident':

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/...b0b25c91804456

“A Facebook page belonging to a Jamie Gilt from Jacksonville with a son of the same age paints the picture of a fierce gun advocate and Ted Cruz supporter.

The owner of the profile did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Just hours before Tuesday’s shooting, the account posted a mock Brady Campaign photo that advocated against using a gun when confronting a burglar. In the comments, the user said everyone in her family knew how to use a gun, including her toddler.

“Even my 4 year old gets jacked up to target shoot with the .22,” the post read.

Gilt’s son has been placed in the care of family members and the state’s Department of Children and Families has been notified. An investigation into how the child got ahold of the handgun is underway, the sheriff’s department said.”

The Facebook page is currently not accessible.
