This is the Bosma murder trial daily discussion thread. The trial daily discussion thread is for discussion of trial evidence/testimony only, not for general discussion, posts about past threads, other members, etc. Off-topic posts will be removed.

Note: Only testimony that is published through MSM reporting (articles and tweets) is allowed. Keep discussion focused on testimony as it becomes public knowledge and remember to link up to MSM reporting of same.

Any testimony that might remain under Publication Ban, and any courtroom discussion that takes place when the jury is not present, is strictly off-limits. Posts that violate a Publication Ban, or discussion when the jury is absent, will be removed.

At all times, keep in mind Websleuths TOS, so affectionately referred to as The Rules.

There will be ZERO TOLERANCE for snarky or disrespectful posts and/or subtle digs at other members. Mods will not be PMing you with explanations, you will find your post has disappeared, or that you can no longer post.

There is to be NO name calling or name variations, not even of the accused.

There is to be no BICKERING between members. A difference of opinion is NOT a TOS violation. Some will think one or both of the accused are guilty, some will think one or both are not guilty, and some will be on the fence. All of that is okay and should NOT BE ATTACKED. If you disagree, that's fine, move past the post. If a post is offensive, alert it and let the Mods review it. If you respond to the post, both the offensive post AND yours will be removed and may result in other consequences.

Other reminders for reference as we have respectful discussion in each of the daily trial discussion threads:

Abuse of the WS Alert feature can have consequences including timeout or worse. Such abuse includes, but is not limited to:

• Overuse of the alert system

• Repeatedly alerting on the same poster

• Demanding a specific outcome

• Alerting on the same post more than once

Once you have alerted on a post, please move on without discussing it, and don't question the decisions of our Administrators, Moderators or Owners, and don't expect personalized responses with explanations about a particular decision.

The principle of “innocent until proven guilty” is for the court room … it is not required that Websleuths members adhere to that principle. Members are allowed to discuss, speculate, theorize, and judge according to opinions they develop from following the specifics of the case.

If you have any questions, PM a Mod and we will be happy to assist you. The main Mods/Admin for this trial will be Bessie, Coldpizza, and sillybilly.

Tim Bosma trial: gunshot residue expert returns to testify
CBC News Posted: Mar 08, 2016

tim-bosma.jpg

Jurors in the Hamilton trial of two men accused of first-degree murder in the death of Tim Bosma will hear more evidence Tuesday from a gunshot residue expert.

On Monday, a blood spatter expert told a Hamilton court that the evidence from a "bloodletting event" inside Tim Bosma's truck points to someone being shot while in the passenger seat of the truck.

Follow our live coverage from the Hamilton courthouse starting at 10 a.m. ET

The number of GSR particles doesn't tell you how many shots were fired, Gerard says. #TimBosma #Bosma #Hamont

#Bosma trial starting on time, with gunshot residue expert back on the stand. @CHCHNews

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 27s27 seconds ago
Muzzle is large source of GSR. Also ejection port of semi-automatic weapon. Number of particles does not denote number of shots fired.

Forensic chemist Robert Gerard continues his testimony this morning at the #TimBosma trial. #HamOnt

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 33s34 seconds ago
Gerard personally examined a toolbox in the #Bosma case. Samples from the truck were sent to him. That happens about half the time he says.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 47s47 seconds ago
Sometimes vehicles brought into Centre of Forensic Sciences and he samples it himself. In this case, sent to him by police. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Drive-by shootings, he samples around window. A getaway car after shooting, he samples steering wheel, gear shift. Shots in car: ceiling.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 43s44 seconds ago
Gerard explaining where they'd do GSR tests in vehicles in diff scenarios (a drive by, a getaway car, a shooting inside). #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 36s37 seconds ago
Doesn't take samples from exterior of car because dirt/weather makes it difficult to find particles. Also other people have access to it.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 35s36 seconds ago
If they believe a gun was fired in the vehicle, he says they'd test roof liner and flat surfaces--as they did in this case. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 1m1 minute ago
Tool box: samples inside tray and inside box. In tray found 1 particle characteristic of GSR. None found in actual body of toolbox. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 48s49 seconds ago
12 samples were taken. Usually they do 4, he says. But all were taken properly so he had no problem running them all. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 26s27 seconds ago
Either shot fired and particle landed in tray or gun stored in tray or someone who fired gun touched tray. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 12s12 seconds ago
Can't know age of particle. #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 11s11 seconds ago
Expert found gunshot residue in the top tray of the yellow toolbox we saw pictures of in court #Bosma

Mar 8 2016 9:58 AM
We should be underway this morning. Robert Gerard, a forensic scientist in the chemistry section of the Centre for Forensic Sciences, will be back in the witness box.

Mar 8 2016 10:02 AM
Justice Goodman now in the courtroom. Jury being recalled.

Mar 8 2016 10:04 AM
Dr. Gerard is now back in the witness box. The juror who had a medical issue yesterday is back in the courtroom.

Mar 8 2016 10:05 AM
Gerard talking about how gunshot residue (GSR) can come from the muzzle, where a casing is ejected, etc

Mar 8 2016 10:06 AM
The number of GSR particles doesn't tell you how many shots were fired, Gerard says.

Mar 8 2016 10:06 AM
He says the number of particles is a "random, chaotic event."

Mar 8 2016 10:07 AM
Gerard didn't examine the truck itself, police officers dabbed it for GSR and then sent the samples to the Centre for Forensic Sciences.

Mar 8 2016 10:09 AM
Gerard says the roof liner and flat surfaces were tested for GSR in the truck.

Mar 8 2016 10:10 AM
Samples weren't taken from the exterior, because of dirt and dust/the elements washing away particles.

Adam Carter ‏@AdamCarterCBC 7s7 seconds ago
Jones says there was "one particle consistent with gunshot residue" in the tray portion of a toolbox that was seized. #TimBosma #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 8s8 seconds ago
Re: toolbox, he examined both the removable tray and the body of the toolbox.

1 particle of GSR was found in tray. #Bosma

Adam Carter ‏@AdamCarterCBC 40s41 seconds ago
Gerard says that means a firearm was either discharged nearby, or discharged and then placed inside. #HamOnt #TimBosma #Bosma

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 25s26 seconds ago
That means the toolbox held a gun, or was near a gun when it fired, or someone touched it after firing a gun #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 35s36 seconds ago
Even one particle shows an association with a firearm, he says. #Bosma

Mar 8 2016 10:11 AM
Court now hearing about testing on the toolbox that was seized. He sampled the inside of the tray and the box itself.

Mar 8 2016 10:12 AM
He says there was "one particle consistent with gunshot residue" in the tray portion of the toolbox. He says that means a firearm was either discharged nearby, or discharged and then placed inside, or handled by someone with GSR on their hands. "It shows an association even at one particle."

Mar 8 2016 10:13 AM
"We can't tell how long a particle has been in the tray," Jones says.

Mar 8 2016 10:16 AM
Gerard now moving on to talk about the results taken from Bosma's truck.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 36s36 seconds ago
Gerard explaining how CFS catalogs and tracks samples via bar codes.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 25s26 seconds ago
Either it had a gun in it, or was near a gun when fired, or someone with GSR on their hands touched it. #Bosma

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 14s15 seconds ago
Toolbox goes from receiving office to chemistry department. Gerard has to use an iris scanner to get access to the toolbox. #Bosma

Yes but did he videotape himself doing it?

Mar 8 2016 10:17 AM
The room where evidence is stored at CFS is locked with an ocular scanner, Gerard says.

Mar 8 2016 10:20 AM
Court now seeing a diagram of the inside of Bosma's truck.

Mar 8 2016 10:20 AM
Multiple GSR particles were found inside the truck.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 10s10 seconds ago
So toolbox goes through bar code scans, scientists go through iris scans to maintain continuity of evidence at CFS.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 53s54 seconds ago
Gerard explains cataloging process at CFS. He has to do an eye scan to retrieve samples for testing. #Bosma

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 35s36 seconds ago
Now going through samples taken from #Bosma truck.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 42s42 seconds ago
Seeing a slideshow that shows where GSR particles were found in samples from #Bosma truck.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 41s41 seconds ago
Crown Craig Fraser is taking Gerard through s diagram about where GSR particles were found in #Bosma truck cab.

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 20s20 seconds ago
Shows most particles found on roof liner over passenger seat.

Lisa Hepfner ‏@HefCHCHNews 11s11 seconds ago
Now seeing where in #TimBosma truck gunshot residue particles were found. Highest concentration near front passenger seat

Susan Clairmont ‏@susanclairmont 17s18 seconds ago
Driver's door panel has 1 particle GSR. Rear driver side door, 1 particle. Front door passenger, 0. Back passenger door, 2.

molly hayes ‏@mollyhayes 18s18 seconds ago
1 particle characteristic of GSR was found on inside drivers door, and 1 inside back drivers side door. #Bosma

Colin Butler ‏@ColinButlerCBC 10s10 seconds ago
Jury now seeing a map of #TimBosma's truck where Gerard found gun shot residue particles, most are concentrated on the passenger side
