Shulman, a 42-year-old postal worker, would pick up prostitutes, get high on crack, have sex, and then bludgeon and dismember his victims. He would then dispose of their body parts in garbage bins throughout Long Island and Yonkers. He was active from 1991 to 1995. He was originally sentenced to death, but his sentence was later changed to life without parole. He died in prison in 2006.

Police think the unidentified woman was white or possibly Hispanic, in her late 20s or early 30s. She had dark hair. She had this tattoo of a green butterfly on her right rear shoulder. Most of her dismembered body was found in a trash bin behind a pizzeria (I Luv New York Pizza parlor at 1288 Midland Ave) in 1992.

The woman's arms and part of one leg were severed and never located — making it impossible for investigators to check her fingerprints.

1995 news - comments in brackets added by me

Victims were white, with dark hair, about 5-feet-3. They ranged in weight from 115 to 135 pounds, police said. Investigators could not determine if the victims had been sexually assaulted (as per his testimony oral sex was performed). Each was found nude. Police believe the women, who have not been identified, may have been transient prostitutes (it is confirmed they were) because a nationwide check of missing persons turned up no clues and no one has reported them missing. The women apparently were killed elsewhere (at his home on Long Island) and their bodies dumped.

The first victim (second) was discovered by a pizza worker behind a Yonkers pizzeria June 27, 1992. The victim, found in a plastic garbage bag, had a gaping hole in the back of the head from an ax-like weapon. Her arms were cut off from the shoulders, and her right leg had been severed. She had a tattoo of a butterfly on her left (correct is right) shoulder. Tests determined she had two Caesarean sections and smoked heavily. Yonkers cops linked the case to Long Island because they found a Suffolk edition of Newsday nearby.

Informative court article about Shulman victims, his practices and how police caught him
http://www.courts.state.ny.us/Reporter/3dseries/2005/2005_07827.htm
From his conversations with several prostitutes, Detective White learned that a white male who drove a blue Cadillac frequently solicited them along Jamaica Avenue. This man took the women not to a motel, but to a residence in Nassau County. He lived in a room in the rear of the first floor, which was entered from the back through a screened-in porch. He would ask the women to strip and "cook" his powdered cocaine into crack, using baking soda and water.

When I saw this Butterfly Jane Doe Doenet profile I was just striked by sadness of the case and of so many unknowns listed even though she was found relatively fast (hours, days?). However, someone was kind enough to make Doe net profile for her, and I think all effort counts. There is no police case number for her listed there (hopefully she has one), there is no Namus profile for her either as far as I can see. I have seen article mentioning that Yonkers police have released composite sketch of her in 1995, but so far I have not been able to locate it.

There are two children somewhere wondering about their mum.

Thank you for posting, Al Ka. I was in touch with Yonkers Det. Geiss about this case a few weeks ago, and he is working on getting her into NamUs.

Yesss! I know you've been wanting this for a while, Jess. Just one step closer to an ID!

Additional info entered in NamUs:

Pre-40 years old
Height still listed at 5'6", but her weight is now listed at 140 lbs instead of 115 lbs (which was what Doe Network has)
Dark brown hair, hazel eyes
Pubic hair present
Pierced ears

Found with light blue short sleeved denim jacket and white bra, size 32A

The toes on her left foot were painted bright red. Her right leg and both arms were not found.

Vertical scar on lower abdomen
Transverse scar in supra pubic region
Scar on midportion of thigh

She looks Italian-American to me.
Also, it looks as though something is written in the blue band going around the middle of her tattoo. I emailed Det. Geiss to see if he knows what it says (or if my eyes are just bad). ETA: He said the tattoo was too faded to make out the writing.

Katrina McVeigh Namus https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/11629.
Interestingly her missing date reported there is June 17 and it is also reported on many other sites about her. That is only over a week before Jane D is found. Katrina's brother is police chief so that could hopefully help speed up any comparisons.

Even though Katrina's picture is not too clear, there is some resemblance and both have similar and distinctive bigger nose. Jane Doe seems to have very unusual ears (in shape and size). Bless LE for posting JaneD pictures on NamUs, that is great help. Wish we could get better picture of Katrina.

Spoke with Det. Geiss this morning -

Yonkers Jane had short brown hair, and her tattoo did not have writing in it; those were decorative dots, not letters, in the blue band.

Also, and this is just my own speculation, I believe her first C-section was the one that left the vertical scar on her abdomen, and the second C-section was done with the transverse cut on her pubic area. See this message board: http://www.whattoexpect.com/forums/35-moms-to-be/topic/c-section-with-vertical-cut.html

Some of the stats don't line up but I hope they have at least considered her since the timeline and location were so close. I wish there were better pictures of her.
