Mother, boyfriend charged in 1-year-old’s death in Franklin County

A Franklin County mother and her boyfriend are behind bars after a 1-year-old girl was found unresponsive in the couple’s home.
“The scene itself and the evidence that we have gathered at this point is just sickening, to know that a child would have to go through this,” explained Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver.

Investigators said Friday that Shannon Gargis picked Serenity Renfroe up by the throat and threw her against a love seat after she spilled the cereal. Gargis, 28, is charged with capital murder in Renfroe's death.

Preliminary autopsy results state Renfroe died of multiple blunt force injuries to the head.

Investigators said the week before Serenity died she had an ear infection and a 105-degree fever, but Gargis and Renfroe wouldn't take her to the doctor due to bruising on her body from recent abuse.

Oh how I wish that we could divert government money away from useless research and use it to find a way to get babies and children safely away from parents and/or girl/boy friends who abuse them and into the lives of those who desperately want children of their own.

The story is horrific. Once again, I sit here stunned.

Father of slain Franklin County child speaks

Renfroe said he had an instant bond with his daughter when she was born in May 2014. He called it the best day of his life.

"They handed her to me first and when she was crying, as soon as I said my first words to her, she stopped crying. The whole time my wife was pregnant I would talk to her," said Renfroe.

For now, the devastated father is seeking comfort in the lord.

"I sat on my front porch last night and I talked to him and serenity, and I asked him to take care of her because I can't," said Renfroe as tears rolled down his cheeks.

RUSSELLVILLE — Shannon Dale Gargis took a long breath and let out a sigh when Franklin County District Judge Paula McDowell told him he would face the death penalty.

Seconds later, standing in front of McDowell, dressed in a black-and-white Franklin County Jail suit with his feet and hands shackled by chains, Gargis closed his eyes and tilted his head back as the judge announced Gargis would be held in jail without bail.

Gargis, 28, is charged in the death of his girlfriend’s 22-month-old daughter, and was in court for a hearing Tuesday afternoon. He only appeared to show emotion when he realized he would be denied bond.

“It was like he was more worried about a bond than what he was charged for, or what he is accused of doing,” Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver said.

“The child was black and blue from head to toe,” Oliver said. “It looked like the child had been thrown around like a rag doll. It was awful. It was like the baby was being used for a punching bag.”

Court officials said Renfroe has 10 pending charges from 2013, which are mostly drug-related charges in Marion County. Reports indicate Renfroe was out of jail on bail totaling $35,500.

Marion County officials were preparing Tuesday to revoke the bond. Records indicate two charges are chemical endangerment of a child, which involved Serenity before she was born.

Oh sweet baby....I'm so sorry nobody was there for you. I would have cared for you.

There truly are MONSTERS that walk among us, pretending to be humans. They have no feelings, no compassion, no love in their hearts......perhaps no hearts at all. This last week has just been too much........................

The Renfroe family said Serenity was so loved by them and the thought of not watching her grow up breaks their hearts.
"This world has so much to offer, and she's not going to get to experience any of it," said Keith Renfroe.

Renfroe has vowed to give a voice to his daughter and wants to see those accused in her death punished.
"I want them to get prosecuted. I will stay on this until the day I die," said Renfroe.

Gargis' bond has been denied, and Hailey Renfroe's bond has been set at $500,000 dollars.
They are both in the Franklin County jail at this time.

Gargis, 28, is charged in the death of his girlfriend’s 22-month-old daughter, and was in court for a hearing Tuesday afternoon. He only appeared to show emotion when he realized he would be denied bond.

Oliver said the baby’s mother, Hailey Rose Renfroe, 20, who also goes by Haley Rose Brisbois, is charged with aggravated child abuse.
~~~
Authorities said it is believed the abuse had been going on for at least a month, and Renfroe knew it was happening and did nothing to stop it. Investigators said Gargis, who is from the Belgreen area, moved in with Renfroe in January.
Capital murder is punishable by death or life in prison without parole.
Aggravated child abuse is a Class B felony and is punishable by 2-20 years in prison.
---they both deserve the max.
Rest in Peace Serenity~
Shannon Gargis, 29, and Hailey Renfroe, 21, are both charged in connection with the March 23 death of Renfroe’s daughter.
Courthouse officials said Gargis and Renfroe pleaded not guilty during their recent arraignments by Franklin County Circuit Judge Terry Dempsey.
They were indicted on the charges in November.
In addition to taking their not guilty pleas, Dempsey put both cases on the March 15 pretrial docket, and set their cases to be placed on the April 3 criminal trial docket.
Renfroe pleads guilty to hindering prosecution
http://www.franklincountytimes.com/2017/07/07/renfroe-pleads-guilty-to-hindering-prosecution/
Renfroe, 22, of Phil Campbell, was in March 2016 charged with aggravated child abuse following the death of infant daughter Serenity – for which Shannon Dale Gargis, 29, of Spruce Pine, was charged with capital murder.
But with the recent release of the official autopsy report from the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, 14 months later, Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said there was no proof to support that aggravated child abuse charge.
Thursday Renfroe pleaded guilty to hindering prosecution first degree, which is a Class C felony. Renfroe was sentenced to six years, 18 months in community corrections and four years probation. It will be up to the Department of Corrections, Rushing said, how the 15 months Renfroe has served thus far will factor in.
Franklin County Circuit Terry Dempsey set the trial of a Franklin County man accused of killing his girlfriend’s 22-month old baby for April.
“He has not finished his trial calendar for next year, but he made it plain that he wants it to be tried during the April jury term,” Franklin County District Attorney Joey Rushing said Friday, following a status conference on the capital murder case of Shannon Dale Gargis.
