GLEN HEAD, N.Y. — A Long Island woman has been arrested on a murder charge after police say she suffocated her newborn baby girl and then stuffed the child’s body in a plastic bag.

Nassau County police say 20-year-old Sharon Seudat was arrested Friday and is being charged with second degree murder.

Officers responded to woman’s home on Walnut Street in Glen Head around 8:25 a.m. Thursday to find her bleeding profusely. She was rushed to the hospital where doctors determined she had just given childbirth.

Detective Capt. John Azzata says Seudat, who hid the pregnancy from her parents, initially denied giving birth.

Investigators returned to the home to find the baby’s lifeless body in a black plastic bag at the home. Azzata says the child was born alive and was suffocated.

Seudat is expected to be arraigned Saturday. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney who could comment on the allegations.

NY has safehaven laws. She could have left that baby almost anywhere, anonymously. Any fire house, hospital, police station. No questions asked.

She was 20 !! Not 13, 14 or 15, the ages parents would blow a gasket because their daughter is pregnant. She was old enough to make some logical choices about pregnancy and even abortion. She was in college, not a high school teen who has to sneak around and try to get to a Dr or a pregnancy counselor. There is never an excuse for this, esp with an adult. Poor baby.

We talk to our children about birth control. IMO every parent should make sure their child, regardless of gender, is aware of safe haven law. Then maybe this wouldn't keep happening. So incredibly sad. When can we get it through these girls heads the shame isn't in getting pregnant, but in murdering your child after having carried to term.

A college student from Glen Head killed her baby shortly after giving birth by “applying pressure” to the girl’s mouth, a Nassau County prosecutor said Friday.
Assistant District Attorney Veronica Guariglia choked up in court as she described how Sharon Seudat, 20, allegedly suffocated the healthy, 7-pound, 5-ounce newborn Thursday inside her Walnut Street home.

Police found the dead baby in a plastic garbage bag that had been wrapped in a blanket and placed on the back deck of the home, authorities said.

Seudat, charged with second-degree murder, was ordered held on $1 million bond or $750,000 cash bail at her arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead. She did not enter a plea.

Authorities said Seudat has made verbal admissions of the crime to investigators and gave a videotaped statement to Guariglia.

“My client is very distraught,” said defense attorney Edward Lieberman of Sea Cliff, who requested that Seudat be placed in protective custody while in jail.

“Obviously, this is a tragedy for everyone involved,” Lieberman told reporters outside the courtroom. “The family . . . now is going to be dealing with the immediate situation.”

Lieberman said he was not aware of a defense attorney being present during the police interrogations.
About 25 members of Seudat’s family were present in court, but declined to comment afterward.

“They had repeatedly asked the defendant where the baby was,” Guariglia said at the arraignment. “The defendant repeatedly denied the existence of the baby.”

Seudat, a Nassau Community College student who worked part time at a carwash, hid her pregnancy from her family and the father of her child, police said.

When she went into labor, Seudat’s father was at work, but her brother and mother were at home, police said. Her mother rushed into Seudat’s bedroom on Thursday after hearing screams but was still not sure what was going on, police said. At that point, the baby was already dead, police said.
