An 18-year-old woman who used a social media app to livestream the alleged rape of her 17-year-old friend was indicted along with another man by a grand jury on several charges including rape and kidnapping, an Ohio prosecutor said Wednesday.

The case came to light when authorities were contacted after an out-of-state friend of the accused woman saw the images, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien said.

O'Brien said it's the first case he's aware of in the county in which an alleged crime was live-streamed.

Truly awful...the iGen vapidly waiting for validation in the form of 'likes' while a friend is raped.

Mr. O’Brien, the prosecutor, said Ms. Lonina had apparently hoped that live-streaming the attack would help to stop it, but that she became enthralled by positive feedback online.

“She got caught up in the likes,” he said.
...
In an interview on Monday, Mr. O’Brien acknowledged that for roughly 10 seconds during the 10-minute video Ms. Lonina pulled the leg of the victim, who he said cried out during the attack saying “no,” “stop” and “help me.” It was not clear though that she intended to help the victim, he said.

From ^ link:
"Since Twitter introduced Periscope last spring, it has been used for more than 100 million broadcasts. Perhaps inevitably, people have also deployed it to showcase themselves breaking the law. The platform’s guidelines ban “explicit graphic content.” "

Can we blame the technology itself? SM users at their worst?

ETA: Seems like recording on phone would 'preserve the evidence' of the crime, but why not call 911 (too)?

From October:

A Columbus man will spend 9 years in prison after pleading guilty to the rape of a teen girl.

Raymond Gates, 29, and Marina Lonina, 18, are both charged in the alleged assault of a 17-year-old girl on February 27.

Court documents say Lonina, the victim’s friend, broadcast the alleged crime on the social media app Periscope.

Marina Lonina's trial was supposed to start on December 12th but it probably got pushed back.

A woman who used the live-streaming app Periscope to broadcast images of a friend being raped was sentenced Monday to nine months in prison.

Marina A. Lonina, 19, pleaded guilty to one count of obstructing justice in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. The sentence, imposed by Judge Kim Brown, was recommended by prosecuting and defense attorneys as part of a plea agreement.

Lonina had been indicted on charges of rape, sexual battery, kidnapping and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a juvenile for her role in the Feb. 27, 2016, incident in which a 29-year-old man raped a 17-year-old girl in a Northeast Side apartment.

With the guilty plea to obstructing justice, she admits that she failed to report the rape or turn over her evidence after the incident, defense attorney Sam Shamansky said.

The victim, now 18, read a statement in court saying she continues to have panic attacks since the rape. She said she thought Lonina was her friend, but "I was too gullible to see how manipulative she truly is."
