Fears are growing for a children's author who has been missing for six days.

Helen Bailey, 51, was last seen walking her pet dog near her home in Royston, Hertfordshire, on the afternoon of 11 April.

The novelist has penned a number of books for teenage girls and is behind the searingly honest blog Planet Grief, which she started after her husband died while on holiday in Barbados in 2011.

Ms Bailey is described as slim, with long black hair but it is not known what she was wearing at the time she went missing. She is thought to have taken her dog, a miniature Dachshund.

Hertfordshire Police said Ms Bailey had ties to Kent, Northumbria and London and are urging for anyone with information to come forward.

Helen Bailey, 51, was last seen at about 2.45pm on Monday near her home in Royston, Hertfordshire, where she was walking her dog, a miniature dachshund.

A children's author who vanished after saying she needed ‘time to herself’ has apparently used Facebook since she went missing, friends have revealed.

Helen Bailey, 51, left the home she shares with partner Ian Stewart last Monday but her disappearance was not reported until Friday.

Friends yesterday told how both she and Mr Stewart, 55, had both suffered trauma after the deaths of previous spouses but now seemed ‘very happy’ together.

What I don't get is she was last seen at 2.45pm but it is not know what she was wearing.

I suppose it could have been someone who just caught a glimpse of her, but even so, it is rather odd.

I also wonder why she was not reported missing for 4 days and , even then, it was friends who reported her missing. I have read the comment that she ( allegedly ) had said she wanted time to herself, but there is surely a huge difference between someone packing a bag and going off somewhere for a bit of quiet time and someone just out walking the dog and not coming home.

Would she really have got engaged without mentioning it to friends?

Does she have children?

...Detective Inspector Lynda Coates, who is leading the investigation, said: “We understand that before Helen was reported missing she had apparently stated that she needed a little time to herself.

"However, it has now been over a week since she was last seen or heard from, and we are growing increasingly concerned for her welfare.

“We are keeping an open mind on the circumstances and have been carrying out a number of enquiries in order to try and locate Helen, including specialist searches in the Royston area.

“I would ask Helen to please get in contact with us if she sees this appeal to let us know she is safe and well."

It's not been mentioned yet who was the last person to see her at that very specific time of 2.45pm.

Surely if you report seeing someone you'd at least be able to remember if they were wearing dark or light clothes?

Very worrisome. I hope she and the dog are safe. She most likely left voluntarily but I always am so concerned about the innocent animals involved in these disappearances.

According to the Daily Mail, the police are at least considering that she has "done an Agatha Christie":

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...le-sightings-51-year-old-disappeared-dog.html

Christie disappeared for 10 days in 1926, eventually being found at a hotel in Harrogate. She never explained why she had gone off but there has been speculation that her husband's infidelity may have been behind it.

So now the police are putting out some descriptions of what Helen was wearing but they seem to conflict.
The person who saw her on Monday April 11 said a silvery raincoat.
The truck driver who, allegedly, saw her on Tuesday is talking about a green Barbour. Of course the truck driver sighting might not have been Helen.

If she has gone off to have time to herself, for whatever reason ( writing or just for some time to think ) then surely she still needs money of some kind to be able to stay somewhere. And, if the truck driver sighting is correct and Helen was seen walking on the road between Royston and Baldock on the Tuesday morning, then presumably, wherever she stayed on Monday night, it was close to her home.

All very puzzling and I do hope she is found soon.

The police have carried out an extensive search of Ms Bailey's finances and there has been no activity on her account since her disappearance or any transfers of large sums of money prior to it.

The police search for her is now focusing on the hamlet of Weston, which is 11 miles from her home, after a sighting of her 10 days ago.

If it's a fact that she got engaged, chances are that she became too enveloped in grief. Grief for the love she lost.

I'm not taking too much notice of the 'engaged' thing, it sounded like one of the investigating officers has maybe used the phrase when asking a neighbour and she's then said something to a reporter - Chinese whispers?
