A 19-month-old girl died after her father accidentally ran over her with a backhoe as he was clearing brush southeast of Los Osos on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The accident occurred around 4:10 p.m. as Wayne Dibble was clearing the grassy area in front of his motor home on Clark Valley Road, according to CHP Officer Jackie Diaz.

Suddenly, his young daughter darted out of the home about 15 feet away, Diaz said.

"She came shooting out of the trailer door," Diaz said. "Mom saw her through the kitchen window and yelled, 'Stop.' "

But Dibble couldn't stop in time.

McKensi Dibble was crushed beneath the vehicle's back wheel, Diaz said.

Wayne Dibble and his wife, Jennifer Fidler, called 911. Then they put the little girl in their car and met the ambulance about a quarter-mile from Los Osos Valley Road.

Members of the Cal Poly polo team practicing nearby watched as emergency medics treated McKensi.

"Gosh, it was so sad," said 25-year-old Francesca Finato, who was filling in as the team's coach.

The young girl was pronounced dead at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center at 4:45 p.m., hospital spokesman Ron Yukelson said.

Story

How sad... The poor baby. Prayers for her family.

The very first case I ever worked on was the case of a little girl who wanted to follow her mother into the convenience store while she was paying for her gasoline and left the little girl in the car. The little girl was struck by the back wheels of a milk delivery truck.

There's just no substitute for common sense.
