Bankstown police commander Detective Superintendent David Eardley has confirmed a 40-year-old man is dead and two others were injured in the shooting.
Police believe the gunman did not act alone and a burnt-out white Mercedes connected to the crime has been found in Greenacre.
While police have not confirmed the identity of the victim, he said police would also be looking at the connection with another shooting at Condell Park earlier this month.
“It’s clearly targeted; this is not a random shooting,” Det Supt Eardley said.
“People need to understand and feel safe to go about the streets and their daily lives.”

POLICE have confirmed the fatal shooting at a shopping centre in Sydney was a targeted attack as details over the victim’s deep ties to Sydney’s middle eastern underworld criminal community are unearthed.

Walid “Wally” Ahmad, 40, a convicted killer and known “standover man” is believed to be connected to a fatal shooting at smash repair business, A Team Smash Repair, where one man, Safwan Charbaji, was fatally shot in the chest.
Another man, Abdullah El Masri, was left in an induced coma after being shot in the face.
“It’s clearly targeted, this is not a random shooting,” Detective Superintendent David Eardley said of today’s shooting.
“It’s clearly targeted towards the man who died of a gunshot wound. Certainly there’s been a recent shooting in Condell Park. Those detectives will be reviewing this today.
“Obviously that will be the subject of an investigation to identify any linkages to the deceased man.”

This is nuts! Shootings at a suburban shopping centre in the middle of the day (and during the week many Australian's minds are on the Port Arthur massacre). What are we becoming?

I know, very frightening. And from the news reports, it seems to have something to do with bikie gangs, or organised crime, and for that to just be played out in public, in a shopping centre??!! Extremely scary.

Two well-known (in the Lebanese, criminal and police circles anyway) Sydney crime families who run 'legitimate businesses'. This shooting is payback for the recent Condell Park shooting. Police are still searching for shooter and telling the warring sides not to 'take matters into their own hands. Three chances of that - Buckley's, none (and you can guess this word) all. The shooter wants to hope they find him before anyone assocuated with the other family does or he needs to know how to hide real good and for a really long time (like the rest of his life). All scuttlebutt from Lebanese friend, who is not involved and doesn't want to be (as most Lebanese people aren't and don't).

A gunman remains at large after a targeted shooting in Sydney's southwest that left one man dead and two other people injured.

A 40-year-old man, believed to be Sydney underworld figure and convicted killer Walid "Wally" Ahmad, was killed in a spray of bullets on the rooftop car park of Bankstown Central shopping centre on Friday morning.

NSW police have turned their attention to an abandoned car in Victoria, and are investigating whether it has any links to the shooting.

Standover man and convicted killer Walid “Wally” Ahmad was shot dead and two others were injured at the centre when an unknown person opened fire inside Bankstown Central, in Sydney’s southwest, just before noon.

Police are now hunting two people over the attack, a man who opened fire and another who drove a getaway car.

A 32-year-old woman, believed to be friends with Ahmad, is recovering in hospital alongside Ahmad’s bodyguard, a 53-year-old man.

Collectively, the characters yelling and beating their chests outside a Sydney smash repairs had a criminal history that would make even the hardest of crooks blush. Manslaughter, a global cocaine trafficking ring, extortion, drive-by shootings, standover tactics and drug rackets masterminded out of the state's most secure prison.

With this as the backdrop, it was hardly likely the meeting between two of Sydney's most well-known crime networks was ever going to end well.

In a hail of bullets that day on April 9, Safwan Charbaji was killed and 25-year-old Abdullah El Masri wore a bullet to the jaw. Three weeks later, in what may have been an act of retribution, feared standover man and crime figure Walid "Wally" Ahmad was executed.

At the heart of this union on an industrial cul-de-sac in Condell Park, where 41-year-old Wally wheeled and dealed, was a dispute worth $100,000...

Six months after standover man Walid "Wally" Ahmad was gunned down in a brazen and very public execution, the man suspected of pulling the trigger has suffered a similar fate.

Hamad Assaad, 29, had been on the police radar after he was identified as a key suspect in the death of Mr Ahmad, who was shot as he sat in a cafe outside Bankstown Central shopping centre in April.

It is not yet certain whether Mr Assaad's death was in response to his widely rumoured role in the death of Mr Ahmad, who was at the helm of one of south-west Sydney's infamous families.

Investigators suspect two gunmen and a driver were lying in wait in a black car near Mr Assaad's Georges Hall home on Tuesday morning for him to emerge.

The man suspected of killing Hamad Assaad was murdered a few weeks later.
