A woman who lives down the street from the fraternity house told NJ Advance Media she was good friends with the slain student. The woman, who was visibly distraught and did not wish to be identified, said she was studying with the student into the early hours Monday before he left to go to a local convenience store.

The student's fraternity brothers told her a man followed the student back from the store and shot him in the fraternity house.

New Jersey Institute of Technology student Joseph Micalizzi was killed early Monday at the Tau Kappa Epsilon house during a burglary attempt that turned violent, Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray said. The 23-year-old Freehold resident was a mechanical engineering major.

Murray on Friday announced murder, burglary and weapons charges against 18-year-old Irvington resident Nafee Cotman, who was arrested Thursday in Irvington and is being held on $1 million bail. Authorities are still searching for 22-year-old Newark resident Taquan Harris, who faces the same charges.

The other suspect, 22-year-old Taquan Harris, of Newark, remained at large until late Friday afternoon, according to officials.

They say police arrested Harris without incident on the 100 block of Munn Avenue in Irvington. He will be held at Essex County Correctional Facility on $1 million bail.

It wasn't immediately clear if either defendant had an attorney to comment on his behalf.

The prosecutor said she does not know why this fraternity was targeted, but there appears to be no prior relationship between Micalizzi and the suspects.

Both defendants pleaded not guilty in May:

Both defendants are also charged with felony murder for a - homicide committed during the commission of another crime - and burglary and weapons offenses.

Cotman's lawyer, Jonathon Gordon, and Harris' lawyer, Sterling Kinsale of the Essex County Public Defender's Officer, entered not guilty pleas for their clients during the hearing that lasted less than two minutes.

On eve of trial, men admit robbery, manslaughter in NJIT student's killing

Taquan Harris, who admitted having fired the fatal shots, pleaded guilty to a first-degree charge of aggravated manslaughter and a second-degree charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm.

Nafee Cotman pleaded guilty to a single count of first-degree robbery, admitting he had tried to take the engineering student's belongings while Harris threatened Micalizzi with the gun.

The state has agreed to dismiss the remaining charges against the two men as part of the plea agreements. Wigler scheduled both Harris and Cotman for sentencing on Nov. 27.
