Police say they have arrested the 'Russian Ripper' amid claims he brutally murdered at least 17 prostitutes, painted signs with their blood and dumped their bodies in landfill sites.

Detectives say DNA technology helped to track down a 51-year-old former policeman - who had previously been arrested for the murders and later released a decade ago.

They believe he may have been responsible for the murder of at least 17 prostitutes, and possibly many more, in the city of Novosibirsk in south-central Russia's Novosibirsk Oblast region.

"If Popkov is convicted for the new murders hes confessed to, it would make him the third-worst serial killer in history behind Luis Garavito and Pedro Lopez. Both Garavito and Lopez operated in Colombia and were convicted for killing 138 and 110 children respectively. Both men are however still suspected of having committed more than 300 murder each. Despite this, Lopez was released from prison in 1998."

Trial for serial killer opens in Russia's Siberia

The latest charges against Popkov include 60 counts of murder, which could make him Russia's biggest serial killer in at least the last 100 years.

Prosecutors began reading out the charges on Wednesday and adjourned the hearing until Monday.

Psychiatric tests run on Popkov have shown that he is sane.
