On 8/31/1999 Joel Matthew Thompson had telephoned his father and stated that he was in St. Louis visiting friends and buying hiking supplies for his planned trip to hike the Pacific Coast Trail which runs from Washington state to Mexico. He was going to start in Portland Oregon Area and hike through California. He stated to his father that he would not contact him for a couple of months.After not hearing from him for several months, numerous inquiries and searches were done to attempt to locate him. He has not been seen or heard from since. A subsequent missing persons report was filed by his father.

Anyone that has seen or may know the whereabouts of Thompson is asked to contact Suffolk County Police Department and Hood River County Sheriff's Department.

Im seriously considering whether Joel made it to Mexico and died there. And so far this John Doe is the only good candidate. Anyone speak Spanish and know of any good sites for Mexico John Does that might have more info (possibly a post mortem) for this guy?

A male body was found in 2019 near Twin Lake Trail, which happens to be along the Pacific Crest Trail.

I know that the PMI says 4 years, but I couldn't find anything on the accuracy of PMI for skeletal remains.

I know it's a real long shot considering the lack of info.

About this Case:
On August 31, 1999, 30 year old Joel Matthew Thompson telephoned his father and stated that he was in St. Louis. After not hearing from him for several months numerous inquiries and searches were done to attempt to locate him. Mr. Thompson has not been seen or heard from since. A subsequent missing persons report was filed by his father. Mr. Thompson was a chain smoker and frequent drinker. He was last known to be wearing jeans (size 32-34) and brown hiking boots. He was carrying a large 50-lb backpack, thin wallet, disposable cigarette lighter, disposable camera, and pocketknife. Anyone with information regarding this case is asked to please contact the Denver Police Department.

So very sad... especially for his father who just remains wondering what ever happened to his son... and the circumstances surrounding all these do not sound good at all.

2. Mugged/killed
3. Hurt during the hiking expedition, not been able to ask for help and died somewhere in the wilderness

There are so many possibilities and so many unidentified bodies, and so many who will never be found.
