All Barnegat Schools were put on lockdown, as a precaution.

With guns drawn and police dogs by their side, police scoured the woods and patrolled several neighborhoods looking for the escaped convict.

Agencies from the Ocean County Sheriffs Department, New Jersey Department of Corrections Fugitive Task Force, Ocean County Special Operations Group, Ocean County SWAT Team, New Jersey State Police, Ocean Township Police Department, and Stafford Township Police Department assisted in the search.

Buckel previously was sentenced to 25 years in prison in 1996 for an aggravated manslaughter in Hudson County, according to court records. The Jersey Journal reported that Buckel received the sentence for slapping 10-month-old Caitlin Colon to death because she was crying. The news report said the death occurred after the baby's mother, a Barnegat resident, brought the child with her to visit Buckle for the Labor Day weekend in 1995. Buckel was required to serve 12 1/2 years in prison before he could be considered for parole, and he was released from prison on June 30, 2010, the report said.
