Law enforcement officers, including many with search and rescue, are currently looking for a missing ASU professor in Oak Creek Canyon near Sedona.

Wow I hope they find her alive.... betting she had some kind of an accident. Wonder how hot it is there at this time of year? Was she camping alone? So many questions....

Debra Schwartz, 59, had been staying at the Pine Flat Campground.

At about 9 a.m., authorities received a 911 call from a man identifying himself as the campground host who told authorities Schwartz did not check out of the campground as expected.

When deputies arrived at the campsite, they found Schwartz's car, her assembled tent and various camping gear. It appeared Schwartz left the campground and did not return.

Schwartz is described as a white female, 5 feet 4 inches, 160 pounds with green eyes and brown hair.

The sheriff's office, assisted by the Arizona Department of Public Safety's air rescue helicopter out of Kingman, has searched the area looking for Schwartz but found no evidence of her.

Detectives are conducting a missing person investigation, trying to learn what happened before Schwartz disappeared. Anyone with information about her location or the circumstances around her disappearance is asked to call the Coconino County Sheriff's Office at 1-800-338-7888.

Gerry Blair with the Coconino County Sheriff's Department told 12 News the campsite host at Pine Flat Campground contacted the department at about 9:07 a.m. Friday, after he visited Swartz's campsite to check on her, since she had not paid to extend her time there. The campsite host said she was camping by herself.

I wonder if they have spoken to other campers that were there at the time. The host should have all their info. I don't know why I find it very odd to camp alone at a structured campground. The only time I ever camped alone was when I was doing a long hike and knew I would not make it out before nightfall. I wonder if they had spoken to her friends/family and if they mentioned if she planned on a specific hike or climb that day? I have a bad feeling she got in an accident, if she got turned around, I would hope she would have found her way out by now. I wonder if she was depressed ....or a solo hiker/camper often? IMHO

No mention of children/spouse/parents/siblings/friends missing her.....

:rose: RIP Debra. she sounded like a good person to know especially since she wrote about humor. what does bottom of a slot canyon mean?

Snipped...
..."This technical rescue team completed two rope rappels to make their way into the canyon to a spot where they were able to see the body and then a third rappel to actually reach the body," according to Gerry Blair with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

Slot canyon

A slot canyon is a narrow canyon, formed by the wear of water rushing through rock. A slot canyon is significantly deeper than it is wide. Some slot canyons can measure less than 1 metre (3 ft) across at the top but drop more than 30 metres (100 ft) to the floor of the canyon.

RIP Debra ....Was hoping for a better outcome.
