Blood dripped from a car as it pulled away from a home in a rural area of Hawaii's Big Island, leading officers to a woman's body stuffed inside the trunk and two children dead inside the house, authorities said Friday.

(...) John Ali Hoffman, 49, was arrested on suspicion of three counts of murder and a firearms offense. Though his relationship to the victims was not clear, it "looks like they were all living in the same house," police Capt. Robert Wagner said.

Officers responded to a disturbance call in a subdivision in the rural Puna district around 1:30 a.m., spotting a man leaving a house and driving away in a car with its headlights off.

They pulled over Hoffman, saw a gun in the front seat and blood dripping from the trunk, police said. Officers opened it and found the woman's body.

In the house, they discovered the bodies of a boy and a girl, Wagner said. Police were trying to identify the victims

The man accused of killing a woman and her two children in Puna on Friday posted a rambling video rant on Facebook days earlier, in which he said he was "oppressed" and that he had been forced from his home because of a conspiracy.

The video was posted Monday and begins, "My name is John Hoffman. I live here in Hawaii on the Big Island."

(...) 49-year-old John Ali Hoffman of Leilani Estates was charged with first-degree murder, three counts of second-degree murder, place to keep and use of a firearm in the commission of a separate felony. His bail was set at $2,750,000.

An autopsy determined that an adult female, a minor female and a minor male died of gunshot wounds.

The woman has been identified but her identity is being withheld pending notification of her family. The children have yet to be positively identified.

Nothing has been confirmed yet, but from everything I have read, this was a domestic crime. The man arrested was living at the house or had been in the recent past and I believe he was the murdered woman's husband/partner. The kids are her kids, not sure if they are his as well.

A check of court records and social media posts revealed Hoffman as a troubled person.

On Facebook, he uses the name Snofru Ali. His most recent post -- most of it incoherent -- talks about peace and war among nations, saying, "No war Russia. No war China. No fighting Turkey." He also adds that he loves "White Americans, KKK's," and "Let's live tomorrow."

In a message he posted last week, he curses the Obama administration and criticizes Big Island judges. Court records show those judges have been involved in a Fern Acres land dispute between Hoffman and a mainland couple.

In his Facebook post, he calls the judges evil, and writes, "All these judge have invested in having me murder." Hoffman also posted a video to where he rambles about his land disputes...and accuses many of conspiring against him.

The man accused of killing a woman and two children in Pahoa on the Big island of Hawaii called police to say his wife had been shot, new court documents show.

A 49-year-old Puna man accused of shooting to death his wife and two young children created a scene during his initial court appearance Monday and said he wanted to act as his own attorney in his murder case.

“I’m my own sovereign person,” John Ali Hoffman told Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas after the judge appointed Brian De Lima as Hoffman’s attorney.

“I don’t want to make a rash decision at this point,” Freitas told Hoffman when Freitas said he wanted to appoint De Lima as counsel. “OK, do you understand? I just want to make sure you understand.”

“No, I don’t understand, Your Honor,” Hoffman replied. “I would like the court, the judge to recuse himself. … Your Honor, I have been in front of the court numerous times on other occasions, including information that could be vital to this case that creates a conflict of interest, judge, and it’s a breach of national security. And if the information is divulged, then there will be a lot of consequences. There will be a lot going on here.”

A mother and her two children shot to death late last week in their Leilani Estates home were remembered Tuesday by family and friends at a domestic violence rally and vigil that started on the Hilo Bayfront and moved to Aupuni Center.

Aracely Hoffman was praised as a God-fearing woman who would do anything to provide a better life for her children, Clara, 7, and John, 5, who was known as “Junior.” Police on Tuesday confirmed the children were the ones whose bodies were found in the Moku Street home early Friday morning.

The children’s 40-year-old mother, originally from El Salvador, came to Hawaii 10 years ago, before meeting, marrying and having children with John Ali Hoffman, who is accused of their murders.

A 50-year-old man accused of shooting his wife and two children to death last year in the family’s Leilani Estates home was found mentally fit to stand trial.

On Tuesday, acting Hilo Circuit Judge Henry Nakamoto ordered John Ali Hoffman to appear for trial at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 14...

Several family members of the slain woman, who originally was from El Salvador, were in court, as they have been for every scheduled hearing… "They’re very strong. They went through the wars in El Salvador. They’ve seen people killed and all of that. To come to this country, where you feel you’re safe, and this happens. What can you do?”
