South America - Roberto Cosulich,~30, South America (Perù?), end of 70's years

    From italian wikipedia

    https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Cosulich

Roberto Cosulich (Venice, July 30, 1946 - disappeared in South America at the end of 1970) was an Italian chess player, winner of the Italian team championship and again according to the Italian championship.Roberto Cosulich, born to a family of Istrian origin, grew up in South America, where his father, a ship's captain, he was working. Here he learned the game of chess as a teacher and was the Grand Master Hermann Pilnik. He returned to Italy in 1965, quickly became one of the best Italian players, obtaining the title of master in 1966.The gifted, participated in the above tournaments to earn some money. The reason of his numerous second places lies in its content with a safe placement (and prize money) rather than risk for first place only to find themselves without the prize money. He participated in the Olympics in Siegen (1970) and Nice (1974). From 1969 to 1978 he won five times second place in the Italian league. In 1967 he won the 8th Italian Team Championship with Triestina Chess Society.

Sixties Cosulich abandoned the family and chess became his only means of support. Always in search of himself and sorely tempted by Eastern philosophies, Cosulich lived hand to mouth, in the hippie style of those years. In 1977 Cosulich was investigated in the course of investigations into the Red Brigades. Was cleared quickly enough and just returned a passport, he decided to leave for India. He returned after a year to set sail for South America where he grew up. Since then there was no further news of him. Following a French chess magazine broke the news of the discovery of a passport of a chess player named Cosulich [last name only?] In Peru, among the victims of a natural disaster. The absolute lack of news since then suggest, despite the failure to find the body, which in that event have found death.

I love cases like these. There's so much mystery, with a kind of a romantic vibe along with the story...

I wonder when the French magazine report was published and where the passport was found.

Wikipedia's article on earthquakes in Peru lists fairly powerful ones in 1979, 1986 and 1990, all with fatalities. Earthquakes continued through the 1990s with varying numbers of fatialities.
