Chelsea has been missing for 2 1/2 months now. The fact that she missed her child's 1st birthday worries me. Not that it's unheard of, but what new mom doesn't want to see her baby celebrate 1st birthday? Makes me sad and scared for Chelsea. These boards really get me feeling down sometimes.

Medical examiner taps DNA science to find missing persons

...“Part of you hopes they never call you, because if they call, that means it’s over,” said Rose Cobo, who submitted DNA to the program after her adult niece vanished in 2016 after being treated at a Brooklyn hospital for postpartum depression following the birth of a son. Chelsea Cobo’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Rose Cobo has given the city her missing daughter's DNA, but she prays she'll never get a call confirming authorities have found a match.
Cobo's adopted daughter, Chelsea, disappeared at age 22 nearly two years ago, leaving behind her infant son, and a call like that would mean the worst has happened.
"I hope I never get a call from the morgue that they found her," Rose Cobo said. "I'm still hoping to see my daughter again, to have her home and start the healing process."
Chelsea Cobo's DNA is one of thousands of samples donated to the city medical examiner' office, as part of a national database program championed by the city. In 2014, the city medical examiner started a "Missing Persons Day" event, typically scheduled in May, where families are offered free services, and can provide photos, DNA and other info to authorities.
Chelsea Cobo, a Borough Park resident, disappeared early May 7, 2016, after she was supposed to be transferred from Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, where she had checked in for drug rehab, to St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers.

Rose Cobo, who's Chelsea's biological aunt and adoptive mother, said the young mom had been hospitalized for depression two weeks prior, where, she believes, Chelsea’s roommate and a male friend introduced her to heroin.

She fears Chelsea may be held against her will, and has been relentless in searching for her, handing out tens of thousands of flyers, showing up at NYPD community meetings and crashing police masses. She's hired a private investigator and runs a Facebook page and a .com page seeking help.

Over the last decade, thousands of DNA samples have been donated to the city’s medical examiner’s office. Most include swabs of saliva from close relatives, but also DNA taken from items used by the missing persons themselves, including toothbrushes, combs, razor blades and, once, even a sanitary napkin.

They’ve led to the identification of about 50 missing people each year, all of whom had been found dead. But for many who have submitted samples, the wait continues.

“Part of you hopes they never call you, because if they call, that means it’s over,” said Rose Cobo, who submitted DNA to the program after her adult niece vanished in 2016 after being treated at a Brooklyn hospital for post-partum depression following the birth of a son. Chelsea Cobo’s whereabouts is still unknown.
