KS - Det. Brad Lancaster, 39, shot & killed, Kansas City, 9 May 2016

A Kansas City, Kan., police detective was shot multiple times near Kansas Speedway and rushed to the University of Kansas Hospital on Monday afternoon. Doctors performed surgery on the detective, but he died according to several police sources.

At about 5:15 p.m., KCK police confirmed the detective died at KU Hospital earlier in the afternoon. The KCK Fraternal Order of Police identified the detective as Brad Lancaster, and KCK police confirm that his family has been notified.

    (...)

The man suspected of shooting him, Ayers, was also accused of multiple carjackings and other shootings on Monday. The chaotic afternoon began around 12:30 when a gunman ambushed the KCK detective.

    (...)

KCMO police then got word about Ayers and the vehicle he was believed to be driving, and began pursuing him at about 2:30 p.m. Police say he wrecked and attempted to take the woman’s vehicle after shooting at her.

Police then shot at him, striking him on 71 Highway near Bannister Road. Ayers and the woman were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

Thanks for starting this thread. It was tense moments in the town I live in on Monday, May 9 when searchers were looking for the suspect of this horrendous crime. With the schools on lockdown and Police helicopters hovering over. Was happy when the suspect was apprehended. But very sad when Detective Lancaster lost his life.

This is from our local paper:

"Tonganoxie Police Chief Jeff Brandau directed traffic Monday along U.S. Highway 24-40. Kansas Highway Patrol helicopters hovered over Tonganoxie looking for the suspect, while the school district was on lockdown."

"Words cannot express what this means to our Department," Chief Zeigler tweeted.

For the first time since May 9 — the day he allegedly killed police detective Brad Lancaster — Curtis Ayers was back in Wyandotte County Wednesday.

He arrived in a Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office patrol car about 11:25 a.m. and soon was booked into the Wyandotte County Jail, one day after he waived his right to fight extradition from Jackson County.
