Portland Police Search For Missing Woman

    Posted: October 14, 2005

Police in Portland are asking for your help in finding 24-year-old Lynn Moran. She was last seen on Monday night, in Portland's old port.

Police say Lynn Moran was in Maine visiting friends and family. She grew up in the Portland area, but was living in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.

Her family became worried on Tuesday, because she never showed up at her job Tuesday morning. Police believe Moran was last seen on Market Street in Portland's old port between 9:30 and 10:30 Monday night. They have been posting missing persons flyers in the area.

Moran is about five foot two and a hundred pounds. Friends who were with her earlier that night tell police they went home before she did. But she left her cell phone and purse at a friend's apartment.

Moran's friends and family say it would be completely out of character for her to just "take off" without telling anyone.

Why would she leave her cell phone and purse at the home of an acquaintance? I wonder if she was actually seen after 8:30 pm by people who knew her or if someone thought they saw her after the flyers were put up? That can be a big difference.

Police, Family And Friends Still Searching For Missing Woman

    <snip>

Lynn Moran has now been missing for one week. She was last seen in the Old Port section of Portland last Monday.

Her friends and family members spent the weekend putting up flyers. They're hoping someone will recognize her picture and come forward with new information.

People who know her say she would never just take off on her own. They're holding out hope that she's okay and that they'll find her.

"We definitely still have hope that Lynn is out there," her brother John said. "We believe she is out there. We've just done everything we can to get in touch with any of her friends who may have heard from her."

Lynn's sister Elizabeth asks: "If you were out Monday night, if you say anything that was relevant, certainly give the Portland Police a call. We're just trying to find information. We're gathering information because we can't find her. It's scary. Really, really scary."

Moran had spent the evening in Portland's downtown, lunching with a friend at Norm's Bar and Grill on Congress Street, then visiting Gritty McDuff's pub on Fore Street. She separated from her friends and, later in the evening, visited the Market Street apartment of an acquaintance, where she left her purse and cell phone, police said.

She was seen between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. walking on Market Street. She was wearing blue jeans, a man's light plaid long-sleeve shirt and no shoes. Witnesses said she appeared extremely intoxicated, which could have made her vulnerable to foul play, police said.

Workers at Bull Moose Music say she stopped in the Middle Street music store between 10 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. She was visibly intoxicated and at times belligerent, said Mandy Wheeler, but the store frequently gets customers coming in from nearby bars.

"I didn't think anything of it," she said, [ ] though she said Moran was noticeable because her shirt was closed by a single button, she was barefoot and looked unkempt. She said a man was offering to help her but she thinks Moran walked away from him.

Moran works in Massachusetts in the field of social work. However, she is from Portland and was visiting her parents, who live in Windham, and her siblings over the Columbus Day weekend. She has six brothers and sisters and is in contact with them on a regular basis, Malloch said.

As a high school freshman, Moran was one of the original students to enroll at the Maine State Academy for the Performing Arts, studying both there and at Portland High School.

In 1999, she received a scholarship from the Portland School of Ballet's CORPS Program, and she was a guest artist with Ram Island Dance's production of "Twisted Rules" in 2001.

Maine's largest city averages between 180 and 200 missing-person cases annually. Most involve individuals fleeing unhappy homes or those with a history of running away, neither of which applies to Moran.

Anyone with information about Moran's movements or whereabouts is urged to call Detective Rick Beaumont at 874-8524.

Search For Missing Woman Moves To South Portland
    UPDATED: 12:31 pm EDT October 18, 2005

PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine game wardens are joining police departments in southern Maine as the search for Lynn Moran intensifies.

Moran, 24, of Shrewsbury, Mass., was visiting family and friends in Portland before she disappeared a week ago. She was reported missing when she didn't show up to work last Tuesday morning.

Wardens are meeting with Portland and South Portland police officers to coordinate their search for Moran. Wardens plan to use dogs and search in wooded areas. Wardens circled the South Portland area in a float plane during Monday's search.

Police believe Morin was last seen in South Portland late the night of Oct. 10. They said they received a credible lead Monday that placed her in the vicinty of Broadway and Anthoine Street at about 11 p.m. that night.

    Search moves beyond Portland
    Tuesday, October 18, 2005

    Excerpts:

Moran was seen around 10:30 p.m. at Middle and Market streets in Portland, police said. She was seen in South Portland not long afterward.
"We're not aware of anyone she would have been visiting in that area," her brother said.

Family members are fearful because Moran has never stayed out of contact with her friends and family for so long. She also has not shown up for work, a job to which she is extremely dedicated and which shows her compassion, her brother said.

"So many times, I would call and I would talk to her late at night, she would still be taking a child to the emergency room," John Moran said. "She put everything she had into caring for those kids. I think she is just a very special person in that way, how much she can give."

Moran said it is difficult to maintain hope and still prepare for the possibility that something terrible has happened.

"It's just incredibly hard, because on the one hand you want to prepare yourself for the worst - you feel you have to prepare for the worst. But you do still hope. You just can't accept that something has happened."

Police found the car she was planning to drive back to Massachusetts where she had left it, near Congress Street.

Police say they have interviewed a man who tried to help her late that night, as well as several other people who interacted with her.

Volunteers search S. Portland for missing woman

SOUTH PORTLAND - About 100 volunteers joined local authorities in searching Tuesday for a Massachusetts woman who has been missing since spending a night in Portland's Old Port a week ago.

The search shifted to South Portland after a woman called police to say she saw Lynne Moran late on Oct. 10, the night she disappeared.

Moran, 24, of Shrewsbury, Mass., was seen walking alongside a road near the Casco Bay Bridge in South Portland not long after she had been seen at Market and Middle streets in Portland, said Portland Deputy Chief William Ridge.

On Tuesday, volunteers joined game wardens, police officers and the Coast Guard in the search. Wardens used a plane to search South Portland while people on foot combed the woods and searched utility easements and along the waterfront.

Family Offers Reward For Information About Missing Woman

It has been nearly two weeks since Lynn Moran was last seen, after a night of partying with friends in Portland's Old Port.

Police and game wardens searched an area of South Portland near the Casco Bay Bridge on Tuesday, after a woman reported seeing Moran in that area the night she disappeared. The search turned up nothing.

Moran's family is convinced that someone else must have information about her whereabouts, and they are now offering a $10,000 reward. "We've kind of hit dead ends. And we can't emphasize enough that we need to find her. We really believe that someone has to have seen her. People don't just disappear," Moran's sister Chris said at a press conference Friday.

Lynn Moran is 5'2", and weighs about 100 pounds. She was last seen Monday night, October 10. If you know anything that might help police solve this case, they would like to hear from you at (207) 874-8524.

No one can find Lynn Moran.

Not the strangers that combed the waterfront weeds in Portland, Maine, near where the 24-year-old Shrewsbury woman disappeared two weeks ago. Not her family, which has offered a $10,000 reward to anyone with information about her whereabouts. Not her friends who spend their days tacking photos of the petite Moran in New England storefronts. Not the police in Portland, who suspect foul play and who have assigned nine detectives to the case.

Moran, the dedicated assistant director of two Massachusetts homes for foster children, was last seen on the cobblestone streets of Portland's Old Port district on the night of Oct. 10. Police say she appeared intoxicated, was barefoot, and wore a man's long-sleeved shirt. She may have been briefly spotted again in South Portland a half-hour later.

The case is reminiscent of the 2001 case of 25-year-old Amy St. Laurent, who disappeared after a night of dancing in Old Port. Laurent's body was discovered in a shallow grave, and an acquaintance was convicted of her murder.

''We're getting dozens of tips [for Moran]," said Portland Detective Karl Rybeck yesterday.

Moran is eccentric, philosophical, and has little patience for insincerity or shallowness, friends said. Sassy, with long, curly, dark hair, she is known for wearing high heels even in Maine winters, according to a friend.

With a ballerina's bearing, Moran ''always turns heads," said her sister Chris Moran, 26, of Holliston, who believes anyone who saw her the night she vanished would have remembered her.

Growing up with her five siblings in Windham, Maine, the 5-foot-2-inch, 100-pound Moran excelled early as a dancer, and won a scholarship to study ballet part time at the Maine State School for the Performing Arts in high school. She graduated from Portland High School and soon began working with children, first in Maine and more recently in Massachusetts.
