The first officer was shot in the area of Ferry and Second streets, officials said. The second shooting happened minutes later near Putnam and Dubuque streets.

"A little after 2:30, there was a series of rapid-fire shots, probably 10-12 of them. And I knew they were close by, I just didn’t know where. And within 30 seconds, cruisers were over here," said Bob McKenna who was in the area near the scene of the second shooting.

The officers are recovering at a local hospital and are expected to survive.

Police said they are searching for a white man with long hair who is wearing a trench coat and a black backpack. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Man accused of shooting 2 police officers may seek insanity defense (Dec 13, 2016)

"In this case, the defense has raised a notice of insanity, claiming that at the time of the crime, their client did not have the mental capability to be held criminally accountable," Assistant Attorney General Jeffery Strelzin said.

The defense filing means the issue of insanity will be explored before a trial date is set.
