    The Advertiser

'THE disappearance of a father missing for a week is out of character, his family say, amid mounting concerns for his safety.

Michael Modesti, 33, of Beverley in Adelaide’s inner west, has not been seen or heard from since last Sunday — Mother’s Day — when he last spoke to his partner by phone.

He has also not made contact with his young son since that time.

The father-of-one’s family say his disappearance is out of character, while relatives and detectives have serious and genuine concerns for his welfare.

Police on Sunday said while he was known to authorities — although not “to any great extent” — officers were keeping an open mind about his disappearance.'

I am going to assume it will turn out to be related to involvement with drugs. JMO based on him being known to police etc ... it's how these things usually seem to turn out

Police declare disappearance of young Beverley father Michael Modesti a major crime
    May 24, 2016 9:11am
    Police Reporter Steve Rice
    The Advertiser

'POLICE have declared the disappearance of a western suburbs father a major crime and believe he is the victim of a drug-related murder.

Michael Modesti, 33, of Beverley, has not been seen or heard from since Mother’s Day, May 8, when he last spoke to his partner by phone.

He has not made contact with his four-year-old son and his bank accounts have not been accessed.

Major Crime Investigation Branch officer-in-charge Detective Superintendent Des Bray said it was most likely that Mr Modesti had been murdered.

“From the outset police had grave concerns because of the circumstances of this case and investigated in the hope that we would find Michael alive and well and that he had disappeared for some harmless reasons,” he said.

“Unfortunately, as time has gone on, the likelihood of that had diminished to the point we now think the possibility of Michael being alive is non-existent and we believe that he was murdered.'

'We have an open mind as to what may have happened to Michael but certainly one of the lines of investigation that we are pursuing is that this may, in some way, be a drug-related murder.'

Major Crime detectives have revealed they believe the Alcatel brand phone — registered in a false name — was used by Mr Modesti to most likely conduct unlawful activity...

Major Crime case officer detective Senior Sergeant Mark McEachern said while a definite motive for Mr Modesti’s presumed murder had not yet been determined, they had established links between him and known organised crime figures who operated in the western suburbs.

He also revealed while there had been 25 Crime Stoppers calls in the case so far, detectives had encountered a reluctance from some of Mr Modesti’s associates who were “fearful and fear reprisals’’ if they provided information to police...

He said finding the missing telephone — referred to as a “burner phone’’ by those involved in illegal activity to thwart police attempts to intercept their calls — was a major focus of the investigation because of the evidence it could contain.

'The family of missing Adelaide man Michael Modesti has released a statement about the pain of his disappearance in a bid to try and find him.

Mr Modesti, 33, has not been seen for three months and police believe he has been murdered, possibly as part of a drug-related crime.

His disappearance is being highlighted during National Missing Persons Week, which begins on Monday, and police have also released two new photos of Mr Modesti.

In a statement his family said the heartache of not knowing what has happened to him was like "living in the darkest of shadows".

They said he was a loving and devoted father who they think about every day.

"Words cannot describe the brokenness our family now lives with each day," the statement said.

"We cannot begin to comprehend the circumstances of his disappearance. As his family we know that this is completely out of character for him.

"Michael has always been the most loving and devoted father. He loves his son more than anything else in this world and we have grave concerns for his welfare because we, nor anyone that we know, has had any form of contact with him."'

Photo: Police released two new images of Mr Modesti.

'Mr Modesti's family is urging anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact police.

"We strongly believe that there must be someone, or an isolated group of people, that must know something," the statement said.

"We ask that if you are that person, or may either be involved or have any information on his whereabouts, that you please contact Crime Stoppers.

"You may remain anonymous. No matter how insignificant you may think your information seems, it may be that something we need that will help bring Michael home."'

'The family said they were continually hoping for Mr Modesti's safe return.

"If by chance you are out there somewhere watching or reading this, know that we think about you every minute of every day," they said.

"You may be missing from our lives but you will never be missing from our hearts. We love you so much."'

Police have today released CCTV vision in an appeal for information about the disappearance and suspected murder of Beverley man Michael Modesti.

Mr Modesti, 33, was last spoken to on the evening of Sunday 8 May 2016 and his disappearance was declared a Major Crime on 23 May 2016.

Footage captured at Adelaide Airport on the morning of 6 May 2016 depicts Mr Modesti wearing a distinctive light-coloured windcheater emblazoned with the word ‘LEE’, light coloured jeans and white sneakers. Police suspect Mr Modesti was wearing the same windcheater and similar trousers and shoes on the day of his disappearance.'

'Detective Inspector Greg Hutchins from Major Crime Investigation Branch said, “Police are asking members of the public to try and recollect any sighting of Mr Modesti’s vehicle in Chenoweth Avenue that morning, and in the following two days before it was located on Wednesday 11 May.

“We believe the car was abandoned in that location sometime between 9.30am and 10.34am two days prior on Monday 9 May.

“We’d also ask that any motorists who may have captured ‘dash cam’ footage in Willsmore St, Beverley extending to Chenoweth Ave, West Croydon (and any main roads in between, including Port Rd, Rosetta St, Kilkenny Rd/David Tce, Torrens Rd and surrounding side streets) on Monday 9 May please contact Crime Stoppers.”

The abandoned car was filmed by a passing Light City Bus, driving west along Torrens Road, West Croydon about 10.34am on 9 May 2016.

Police are also appealing for a woman who exited the N254 bus at Stop 19 (Torrens Rd) and walked past the abandoned vehicle about 10.34am on Monday 9 May 2016 to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or report online at https://crimestopperssa.com.au'
