A pregnant woman was shot and killed in northwest Toronto on Sunday night, but doctors were able to deliver her baby with an emergency C-section, police said.

Candice Rochelle Bobb, 35 and five months pregnant, was shot while sitting in a vehicle on John Garland Boulevard at Jamestown Crescent, Det.-Sgt. Mike Carbone told a news conference Monday.

Bobb was in the car with three others, on the way back from watching an amateur men’s league basketball game. They were stopped on John Garland Blvd., dropping one of the passengers at home around 11 p.m. when “a person or persons” opened fire on the vehicle, Carbone said.

“It’s outrageous,” Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner said. “The whole community is outraged. The whole city is outraged.”

Supt. Taverner urged the shooter or shooters to “go to a lawyer and turn themselves in to the homicide squad.”
For a baby to have a reasonable prospect of survival, it should have a gestational age of at least 24 weeks and a weight of 500 grams, said Dr. Jodi Shapiro, head of obstetrics and gynecology at Toronto’s Mount Sinai hospital

Candice Rochelle Bobb, 35, of Malton, was in the back seat of a car near John Garland Boulevard and Jamestown Crescent in suburban Rexdale when someone in a vehicle driving in the opposite direction started shooting, striking the pregnant woman, according to Homicide Det.-Sgt. Mike Carbone, who provided an update Monday morning.

"For some reason, only known to the offender at this point, that vehicle was certainly targeted," said Carbone about the vehicle that Bobb was sitting in

Toronto Police Det-Sgt Mike Carbone says Bobb had travelled to the east end of the city with three men to take in an organized basketball game. Later that night, back in the west end, the car Bobb was riding in stopped on John Garland Blvd to drop someone off.

Carbone says that is when a shooter or shooters unloaded several bullets into the car. He could not say if Bobb or anyone else she was with was targeted, but he believes the car they were in was.
Bobb was driven to Etobicoke General Hospital where she later died. A team from Sick Kids is helping with the care of the infant at Sunnybrook Hospital's neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU). Carbone says the baby is in stable condition.

NEWSTALK 1010 medical correspondent Dr. Mitch Shulman tells Moore in the Morning a baby delivered at 20 weeks is unlikely to survive.

He says for foetuses delivered at 23 weeks, only two or three out of 10 make it.

"The odds are stacked against this child," Shulman says.

nvestigators are looking into the possibility that a rivalry between two Toronto-area gangs played a role in the fatal shooting of a pregnant woman in Rexdale on Sunday night, police sources tell CBC News.

One of those gangs is based out of Driftwood Avenue in the Jane and Finch area, and the other on Jamestown Crescent in the Kipling and Albion area.

Police sources also tell CBC News the victim in the shooting, 35-year-old Malton woman Candice Rochelle Bobb, was shot in the chest but was likely not the intended target. Six shell casings were found at the scene, the sources say.
News of the shooting rocked the Jamestown neighbourhood and prompted calls from residents for violence in the area to stop.

"To hear that, every time my belly hurts," said resident Maureen Archibold, who said she plays a mother figure to many young people in the neighbourhood.

"I want them to bury me, not me burying them.

Thirty-five-year-old Candice Rochelle Bobb and three others were driving home from a basketball game on the night of May 15 when they stopped to drop off one of the passengers on John Garland Boulevard, near Jamestown Crescent. While the vehicle was stopped, police said someone in another vehicle approached the car and sprayed the vehicle with bullets. Bobb, who was five months pregnant at the time, was shot while sitting in the back seat. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors delivered her baby via emergency C-section. Bobb was pronounced dead a short time later. The baby was transferred to Sunnybrook Hospital in life-threatening condition, however, Bobb’s child died about three weeks later.
