Another report in very similar terms from Auntie:

A severed human head has been found in a Cambridgeshire quarry.

The head was found by a quarry worker at Mepal, between Chatteris and Ely, on Monday afternoon. It is not yet known whether the head was male or female.

Officers are also searching a site 40 miles away in Sharnbrook, Bedfordshire, where they believe the head came from.

The second site in Mepal, Beds. isn't too far from where Natalie Hemming went missing (along with her lounge rug) two weeks ago.

Det Supt Chris Ward said: "Anybody who has seen a similar rug discarded anywhere, particularly within Aylesbury, Oxford, Milton Keynes or over the border in Bedfordshire, [or who has] has seen it, picked it up or moved it [should] to speak to us as soon as they can."

This narrows it down a bit.

Severed head found in a quarry skip was a woman in her 30s or 40s says stunned worker who uncovered it

A severed human head found 'covered in blood' and discarded in a quarry skip was that of a woman in her 30s or 40s, according to a stunned worker who made the grim discovery.

Police launched a nationwide investigation after the body part was uncovered at about 3pm yesterday in Mepal, near Ely, Cambridgeshire. Officers are treating the death as 'suspicious'.

Suspicious? Whatever gave them that idea?

"Specialists are still unable to identify whether the head belongs to a man or a woman, however, based on the information available at this time, it is believed the person died before 1 January 2015.

    (...)

In particular, they said they were not linking it to missing women Natalie Hemming and children's author Helen Bailey - both of whom disappeared in recent weeks.

The force also said the find had not been linked to the murder of Ramute Butkiene, whose torso was found inside a suitcase in her killer's flat last year.

A severed human head found in a quarry belongs to a man aged between 30 and 50 who may have died 50 years ago after being hit by a train, police say.

The remains were found by a worker at a quarry in Mepal, near Ely, Cambridgeshire, in May, but police had been unable to say if it was male or female.

Specialists now believe the man was aged between 30 and 50 and could have died as long ago as the 1960s, although experts believe it is more likely to have occurred about 10 years ago.

Head found at quarry could have come from train accident 50-years ago

A severed head discovered in a quarry could have come from a man who was decapitated by a passing train 50-years ago, the police have said.

The grisly find was made by workers in Cambridgeshire last month, but detectives said they believed it had initially come from a quarry site almost 40 miles away in Shanbrook, Bedfordshire.

Unable to identify it, police drafted in experts from the Natural History Museum in London and now think the victim may have been killed as the result of a tragic accident that was not known about at the time.
