A 2-year-old girl died Thursday morning after she was shot in the head during an incident involving her father and a neighbor on the city’s east side, according to police.
The girl, initially reported to be 3 years old, was shot around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday while sitting in a car with her father on the 16400 block of Fairmount, police said. She “had a birthday coming up” which contributed to the initial confusion about her age, Officer Dan Donakowski said Thursday morning.
The suspect and neighbor, identified by police as Cleveland Smelley, allegedly “went up to the vehicle they were sitting in and opened fire,” Officer Jennifer Moreno said Wednesday...

Channel 4 is reporting now (12:00 news) that the parents of the little girl have told WDIV that she is still clinging to life and is not deceased as has been reported by local media. I'll stay on it throughout the day and report.

WWJ radio (CBS, Detroit) has also reported that the little girl has died.

DETROIT - Detroit police have captured a 31-year-old suspect wanted in connection with a shooting Wednesday on the city's east side that killed a 2-year-old girl.
Cleveland Smelley was arrested Thursday. He was on parole and considered armed and dangerous.
The girl, identified by family members as McKenzie Oldham, was in a vehicle with her father in the 14000 block of Fairmont Street when a fight broke out, police said. Sources told Local 4 the fight started after someone spilled a drink.
Shots were fired, and McKenzie was struck...

Detroit News article has been updated yet again to include that McKenzie is clinging to life. Maybe she is being kept alive on ventilator and/or other life support.

McKenzie Oldham will not live to see her third birthday, according to relatives.
The 2-year-old girl, who was shot in the head during a reported argument over spilled Kool-Aid, was declared clinically brain-dead at 5:10 p.m. Friday, although the family will keep her on life support until Sunday so her organs can be harvested, according to her great-uncle.
“There was a complete brain shutdown, and the doctors said if they kept her on life support, she’d have been a vegetable,” McKenzie’s great-uncle, Michael Oldham, said Friday evening. “They’re going to donate her organs, so they’ll keep her on the machine until Sunday.” ...

DETROIT - Makanzee Oldham is breathing only through a machine at St. John as doctors are preparing her organs for donations.
The pain of the shooting is felt not only by the 2-year-old's family, but the entire community, which hopes this is final child killed on the streets of Detroit.
