Baylor to re-assign president Kenneth Starr, fire football coach

WACO, Texas – Baylor University demoted school President Ken Starr and fired football coach Art Briles on Thursday, issuing a scathing report over the university's handling of sexual assault complaints against players.

The nation's largest Baptist university said in a statement that Starr, a former prosecutor who investigated the Monica Lewinsky scandal, will vacate the presidency on May 31 and will become the school chancellor. It said it suspended Briles "with intent to terminate" and placed athletic director Ian McCaw on probation.

This is looking to be a major sports scandal unfolding at Baylor. Art Briles has been fired.

Here is the report.

Well now. That is kind of ironic. The fact finding report cites that it was high leadership that dragged their heels on Title IX and disregarded complainants. But, the football coach goes and the president is just demoted.

"Pepper also found examples of actions by University administrators that directly discouraged complainants from reporting or participating in student conduct processes, or that contributed to or accommodated a hostile environment." https://www.baylor.edu/rtsv/doc.php/266596.pdf

I don't really follow Baylor athletics, tbh. But in one news story I was initially disgusted to find out that Starr had been their president, and then so relieved to find out he was demoted. It made me think of some nights back in college (or as we called it where I was, university) in which one became sorrowfully drunk, but then became euphorically happy. Well, in a way, I guess. I can't believe any university made Starr its president, and I'm grateful they saw the error in its ways.

Some interesting clips from an interview done with Kenneth Starr after his resignation. Apparently he was being coached in his answers:

Question leads to awkward interruption during Starr interview

“WACO, Texas (KWTX) A question during News 10’s interview with former Baylor Chancellor and President Ken Starr about a rape victim’s email that was sent to his office and to several other officials led to an awkward interruption during which a well-known crisis management specialist convinced Starr to change his response.

The email, with a subject line that read, “I was raped at Baylor”, was sent by a former student who says she was raped while attending the school in 2010.

The woman, who has not been identified, told ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” Wednesday morning that she did not believe Starr’s call for transparency was genuine because he never responded to her email.

KWTX anchor Julie Hays asked Starr if he had seen it, he first responded “I honestly may have. I’m not denying that I saw it.”

After he answered, Merrie Spaeth, whom Starr had introduced as a family friend, approached KWTX News Director, Mikel Lauber, who was positioned behind the camera during the interview.

Lauber says Spaeth asked him to promise to not use that portion of the interview.”

Video clips and article. Spaeth, as the article later points out, "In 1998 she coached Starr before he testified before the House Judiciary Committee as the U.S. House prepared to impeach President Bill Clinton." Family friend, my eye.

Maybe Starr has chronic dementia?
