Japan - Yamato Tanooka, 7, Hokkaido mountains, 28 May 2016

    Guardian:

The parents of a seven-year-old Japanese boy, Yamoto Tanooka, have said they had left him as a punishment and he did not get lost during a hike as first claimed, police said.

More than 150 rescuers and police officers were searching for a second day in mountains on the Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s main islands, after Yamato Tanooka went missing on Saturday.

His parents first told police Yamato got lost while the family were out walking in the area, a habitat of bears, to pick wild vegetables. But the parents later admitted they had lied.

“The parents left the boy in the mountains as a punishment,” a spokesman said. “They said they went back to the site immediately but the boy was no longer there.”

The father told a TV Asahi reporter he did not dare admit the truth while requesting a search.

In an area habituated with bears? How could anyone seven years old do anything requiring this crazy 'punishment?'

The boy’s 44-year-old father, Takayuki, told police they left him in the mountains on the way home from a park, where he had scolded his child because the boy threw stones at cars driving on a street nearby.

ETA: Hopefully the bears have enough other food supplies in the area and the boy is just lost having wondered off and will be found soon ...

Call me cynical but I can't help but wonder if there's still more to the story. When was little Yamato last seen by anyone other than his parents?
