A police captain was fatally stabbed and his companion was also killed at their home in a small town northwest of Paris on Monday evening, and within hours the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the murders.

The police captain, who was not otherwise identified, was outside his home in Magnanville when he was stabbed by an unidentified assailant, who appeared to have then entered the house and took the captain’s companion and 3-year-old son hostage (...)

Members of an elite French police unit arrived and raided the home. They fatally shot the attacker, found the woman dead and rescued the boy. The statement added that the woman was an employee of the Interior Ministry.

A convicted French terrorist who pledged allegiance to ISIS fatally stabbed an off-duty police officer (...) while live-streaming part of the savage attack on Facebook, officials said.

The killer, French national Larossi Abballa, kept a list filled with other targets — including rappers, journalists, public officials and other police officers, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said Tuesday.

But he ended up attacking Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, a police commander in the Paris suburb of Les Mureaux.

Arguments grow in France over 'missed signals' with police killer Larossi Abballa

Three others detained
Since Abballa's rampage on Monday, three men associated with him have been detained. They are still being questioned, according to French officials.
One of them is Aberouz Charaf-Din, regarded as a leading member of the 2011 cell. Charaf-Din was sentenced to five years but according to his attorney released in 2014 or 2015.

In the chilling video he recorded while at the couple's house, Abballa urged ISIS sympathizers to attack police, prison officers or town officials.
"It's super simple," he said: "Just wait for them outside their offices."
It's a form of terrorism that needs no wider network, nor contacts with ISIS, nor the purchase of heavy weapons. As one official noted Thursday, the opportunities for such attacks are infinite.

Larossi Abballa has links with the perpetrators of the failed attack on a church

The terrorist who killed the police couple had links with the perpetrators of the failed attack against a church in Villejuif.

The terrorist who killed a police couple of on Monday evening in Magnanville (Yvelines) appears in a note of information written in April 2015 by officers of the Yvelines dept. that links him with the authors of the assassination attempt on the Church of Villejuif . Larossi Abballa has actually been seen driving a van belonging to Abdelkader Jalal, a 33 year old male who then has recently been arrested and indicted for having been one of logisticians of Ghlam Sid Ahmed, the terrorist who wanted to attack a church in Villejuif and killed the young woman Aurelie Chatelain.

Because the attack on the church in Villejuif failed (April 19 2015), many were and still are not aware of its severe implications.
This is the kind of attack that you expect among fanatics in Pakistan or Indonesia, to name a few.
Villejuif is a town near Paris, and Ghlam Sid Ahmed had been looking for a nice church with a lot of folks.
Why and how he killed Aurelie Chatelain still remains a mistery, but it is said that her death prevented a massacre.

Paris (AFP) - Three men with suspected links to jihadist Larossi Abballa, who killed a police officer and his partner outside Paris last week, were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of spying on other police officers, police sources said.

The three were arrested in the Paris suburbs of Mureaux and Mantes-la-Jolie, home of Abballa who was shot dead by police after killing the couple at their home on June 13.

One of the three is on France's national security watchlist.

They are suspected of spying on a police event in the Yvelines region west of Paris, one of the police sources said.

Two other men linked to Abballa were charged and detained by an anti-terror court on Saturday.

Man arrested in connection with jihadist murder of police couple after DNA-match with traces found near their home

French police arrested a man on Monday in connection with the jihadist murder of a police couple after his DNA was matched to traces found in their home near Paris, legal sources said.

The 24-year-old has been linked to Larossi Abballa, the Islamic State extremist who claimed the June 2016 attack in a live video from the murder scene before being killed by police in a shootout, the sources added.

The suspect, who was not on a terrorism watchlist but was known to be radicalized, was arrested in the western Paris suburb of Les Mureaux.

His brother has already been charged with providing logistical assistance to Abballa, whose chilling attack — one in a string of assaults in France since January 2015 — caused shock in police ranks.

The man arrested Monday was already investigated over a foiled attack by a group of female jihadists who tried to set set fire to a car containing gas canisters near Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris in September 2016.
Charged with failing to report that plot, he spent four months in preventive custody before being released in January.

Investigators believe that a notorious French IS member, Rachid Kassim, directed both attacks from the Middle East, using the encrypted Telegram app.

Kassim is believed to have been killed in a coalition air strike near the Iraqi city of Mosul in February.
