She had lived in the apartment since February. Her roommate was in their home state of Pennsylvania for a wedding, said Crystal Strous, Amanda’s mother. Her fiance, Corey Michael, was in Maryland for a guys’ weekend with some of his groomsmen.

“This was the only weekend that she was alone down there,” Crystal Strous said.

Maybe someone possibly upset about the upcoming nuptials, but didn't want to hurt the fiancé or roommate? Arson is a pretty hands off way to kill someone.

It is very odd that this was the only weekend she was there alone. If not a random act, then, I wonder if it was arson and murder for hire. So sad....

Officials charged Mathew Benner, 28, on Monday with the murder of Amanda Strous, 27.

An arrest has been made after a college counsellor was found dead in her burning apartment just a few weeks before her wedding. Cops in Nevada arrested Matthew Benner, 28, in relation to the murder of Amanda Strous, 27. CBS Charlotte reports that Benner lived in the apartment above Strous.

They arrested her neighbor.

Authorities were able to locate Benner by tracking his cellphone via GPS, according to news release from the Nye County Sheriff. Deputies found Benner's car parked at a Best Western on the 1100 block of Highway 160...

During an interview with the sheriff's deputies, Benner confessed to the murder, according to the release.

I would like to hear some female speculation please. Is this going to be an unstable upstairs neighbor thing where "I asked her to turn the music down 3 times"? Or something a little deeper? If she were home alone I doubt it was a night of loud music and loud laughing downstairs. Do you think the upstairs neighbor knew the fiancee' was in MD? Obsessed stalker type jealous neighbor?
I would assume we will soon learn a few details to answer my speculation since he has confessed.

My female gut says creepo! Stalker/Anti-social type, looking for the perfect opportunity (everyone gone), maybe let it get out of hand, possibly first major crime. The fire and fleeing the scene just seem very impulsive and amateurish to me.

I'm just glad he was caught and there will be justice!

I think he was infatuated with her, and had been watching her for awhile, knew she was getting married.... and couldn't handle the IMAGINED rejection.

Unstable upstairs neighbor getting even for some imagined slight which might have been rejection. It might have all been in his head but he was very angry and knew she would be alone.

More unhinged than a typical stalker neighbor, but also cold and calculating.

And cruel. Poor Amanda.
