Authorities are on the lookout Tuesday for an unidentified man believed to have murdered two transients in Bay Park and Ocean Beach (...)

The body of the first victim, 53-year-old Angelo De Nardo of San Diego, was found in flames in an open area off the 2700 block of Morena Boulevard shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, according to police.

(...)

Shortly before 5 a.m. Monday, a second homeless man was found bleeding from stab wounds to his upper body in the 3700 block of Greenwood Street, near Valley View Casino Center in the Midway district. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

Less than 90 minutes later, another transient was found dead in the 2500 block of Bacon Street, in a coastal neighborhood about three miles from the scene of the second attack.

San Diego police are investigating a series of violent attacks against homeless people, including one man who was “badly burned” and killed, raising concerns that someone may be targeting vulnerable individuals living on the streets.
Police in the southern California city , which has long grappled with a large homeless population, said on Tuesday that they believe the same suspect is behind three gruesome attacks against homeless people over the weekend, including the two murders

Authorities released convenience store surveillance video of the man — identified as a person of interest — wearing a baseball cap, jacket and a backpack. They describe him as 30 to 50 years old.
“When you look at all three cases, looking at the scene, talking to people, this person is definitely someone we want to talk to,” said San Diego police Capt. Dave Nisleit, who declined to comment on possible motives for the attacks.

Another attack happened this morning :( This gentleman is not expected to survive.

A transient man suffered life-threatening injuries in downtown San Diego Wednesday morning in what may be the fourth in a series of attacks that has already left two homeless men dead and another severely injured.

Officers told Fox 5 that the latest victim, who was set on fire early Wednesday, is not expected to survive.

this is either a mentally ill homeless man or some nutjob who hates homeless for some reason. how crazy, this is a bonafide spree killing.

A few thoughts- people have said he looks homeless based on the screenshots. I disagree. At least in the sense that yes, he has a backpack but he's clean shaven and wearing light colored pants that don't appear filthy. Also his clothes and sneakers look relatively expensive- not high end but mainstream style : the gap, banana republic, LL bean. He doesn't look like he's been living in them for very long, is what I'm trying to say.

I think he's a serial killer/spree killer and he's organized in planning this sick mission out.

He's wearing a cap to help hide his features and he's *wearing gloves* which means no fingerprints from the convenience store.

I agree with you. I also think the surveillance video is pretty clear (as far as surveillance videos go), so I'm hoping word gets out and someone recognizes him.

How heartbreaking and what an evil monster this is.

"On Sunday morning, witnesses reported seeing a man on fire running down the train tracks alongside Interstate 5, according to CNN affiliate KSWB. Police later found the badly charred body of a male.
At about the same time, witnesses reported seeing another man in his late 40s to early 50s darting across the freeway away from the train tracks carrying a gas can, said Lt. Manny Del Toro with the San Diego Police.

…..

All the attacks appear to be "senseless, random attacks on the homeless," he said. He encouraged the homeless population to sleep and walk in groups and noted that the attacks have been unnerving for the city"

Im curious if this is drug related, statistically speaking

Based on the screenshots I couldn't say he looks more homeless than not. I wonder if he's attempting to look "homeless" to avoid detection either when dealing with his potential victims or dealing with others. If you look like that in a grocery store or 7-11 most people are going to look past you. Just another homeless guy wearing a backpack.

The gloves though. They make him stand out.

How so? And what do you mean by "statistically speaking"?
Many homeless people have mental health issues, some have issues with addiction and/or alcoholism as well (often self-medicating).
Homeless people as a group aren't exactly flush with money for purchasing drugs.
They also aren't usually dealing.
They are often victims of violence though.
They are a very vulnerable population.

All my own opinion here. MOO, MOO, MOO

This sick horrible man probably thinks he is some kind of vigilante solving the problem. I've been following the local news around here and feel the city needs to seriously change their attitudes towards what will really help the homeless. MOO, we need to start addressing real solutions and not just shuffling the homeless around. I think what this man is doing to the homeless is one of the worst crimes against human beings. I hope and pray these crimes will bring awareness to providing the homeless with some real options, other than being harassed out of areas and told to sleep in the day or in a public lighted place.

Media coalitions aimed at homelessness
San Diego should replicate the San Francisco Homeless Project

In San Diego, as the July 12 All-Star Game approaches Mayor Kevin Faulconer has not formally announced any plan to relocate downtown homeless individuals. Instead, the SDPD oversees daily clear-outs of encampments and threatens to “bring down the hammer” on faith-based groups that do food-share programs, while the city places rocks under bridges to discourage sleeping there. It’s been a shadow sweep.

Been to 17th Street in East Village lately? The police sweep sizeable encampments there in the morning. The homeless pile their belongings into the proximal Neil Good Day Center, and then by evening return tents and tarps to the street. What’s the endgame? What’s the plan? There’s ominous potential for confrontation there on 17th Street that hopefully won’t become violent or deadly.

Tiny Houses for the Homeless
June 22 2016 01:05 PM
One advocate says small shelters are a needed stopgap
http://sdcitybeat.com/article-17545-Tiny-Houses-for-the-homeless.html

CB: Why don’t women and children go into shelters?

JC: There’s too few shelters for women with children. St. Vincent de Paul’s has a waiting list. Rescue Mission is not supposed to take more than 60 but they usually have more. The situation, from what I’ve been told, is awful; all these kids in one room; sick kids, babies with dirty diapers, crying. And then in the morning you have to take all of your stuff and leave, and wander around all day because there are no day centers for families, and then get back in line in the evening.

Absolutely horrific! I do hope LE is able to bring this monster to justice ASAP.
:please:

IMO profiling 101 - looks like a working guy trying to dress down not to be noticed...
- but a green baseball hat (stands out)
- jacket and gloves (really - it is hot there)
- light colored pants (not homeless enough either)
- clean shave, trim cut
- also witnesses saw him running with a gas can afterwards...so he wasn't hiding the can (major mistake on his part - good for us)
- targeting homeless and males - definitely issues with both of those key points. maybe loves SD so much and doesn't want to see it like this or he was homeless once or some connection to it

beyond sad
I sure hope LEs campaign with pics works!

he burned him alive, awful, what a savage.

this makes sense. BBM, there was a case not too long ago, I cant remember the names but some teen guys killed this homeless guy for standing up for another homeless guy they were shooting w an airsoft gun. they came back LATER and killed him. I don't live there so I don't know the "climate" regarding homeless, but I do know they have a large homeless population and also a large conservatively political population. idk could that be related?

I'm sure this homeless killer has been feasting on the righteousness of those who want to do away with the homeless as though they aren't even human. We're a tourist city and lots of money is spent on being the finest city, but it's sad if that means our hearts have grown cold to people desperate to survive.

The city spent over $57,000 to put those rocks in under the underpass, and it got a lot of attention as showing the city in need of leadership with a heart. Just saying.

Underpass rock garden is called 'anti-homeless'

"This is starting to tear me up inside," says downtown activist McConnell. He points to absenteeism on the part of the mayor and his lack of commitment to solving the homeless problem.
